Freeciv is a free turn-based multiplayer strategy game, in which each player becomes the leader of a civilization, fighting to obtain the ultimate goal:
To become the greatest civilization.
Players of the CivilizationÂÂÃ⠀šÃ‚® series by Microprose ® should feel at home, since one aim of Freeciv is to have modes with compatible rules.
Freeciv is maintained by an international team of coders and enthusiasts, and is easily one of the most fun and addictive network games out there!
It also means it has very extensive multilanguage support, something rare in games.

My flatmate and I are still addicted to Civ3, but i'll give this a look if the AI is better (which it's supposed to be).

I get a big 'Forbidden' error when trying your link.
Completely  , the 1st ever work experience I ever did at school was with Microprose, when they were based in Tetbury, Glos. This was about the time they were releasing Rick Dangerous. I spent the entire week testing games - it rocked.

Should be OK now - it has been on Slashdot and, as usual, they were getting murdered by visitors so they have went to a text only version.
Try it again now - works for me.

I failed one of my first year exams because i stayed up all of the night before playing civ2.....
