Good Friday in N Ireland

The world and her granny get Good Friday and Easter Monday off as public holidays. In the six northern counties of Ireland, things are different. There, Good Friday is an ordinary working day and Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday are public holidays.

The reason? Because Easter Tuesday heralds the start of the Marching Season, so we get the Tuesday off to watch or participate in the parades.

What do you all think of this?

Re: Good Friday in N Ireland

Good friday for me is a normal working day

I can see the reasoning behind the public holiday on the Tuesday, but surely Good Friday should still be a Public Holiday

You still get two days off, just Mon & Tues instead of Fri & Mon.

Surely Good Friday is a RELIGIOUS holiday ...So I think that denying someone a religious holiday might be a sticky one..

Re: Good Friday in N Ireland

I don't think we can really claim public holidays 'on religious grounds' - if that was the case, I'd start my own cult that had a holiday 364 days a year!!

Surely it doesn't matter? We all get two official days off.. sorted!

Agreed people in Northern Ireland should enjoy Good Friday as a public holiday as in the rest of the UK. It is time now to discourage marches and sectarian festivals on both sides: Unionists & Nationalists.

Re: Good Friday in N Ireland

I have worked for companies that have the Tuesday off instead of Friday, one company asked our department if we wanted fri/mon or mon/tue.

I remember another company used to have fri/mon for branches in England and mon/tues for those in Wales.

I dont care less, as long as I get 2 days off.

I believe it was made a Bank holiday so as to offer those of a religious frame of mind the chance to dutifully attend church without being penalised by less God fearing employers...
