Not if it's not needed - where's the financial sense in supplying a customer with two pieces of hardware (stb and sacm), when an stb will do both?

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
I have still not recieved my upgrade.
I rang ntl, got it done by customer service, though, brilliant, that was quick and easy.
nothing for over a week..
ring again.. im told that my connection status is set to 2mb, and they dont know why iit isnt showing it my end, and transfer me to the tech support poeple, except they send me through to TV tech support, who can neither help me, nor transfer me to broadband tech support
ring again, get told that the upgrades arent happening yet and that I should wait for it to be automaticaly upgraded, ask to be transfered to tech support, get through to someone in india who cant help, but wont transfer me through to the tech support in the uk and instead sends me back to customer service..
customer service cant transfer me to a uk tech support person either (why the hell not?) but says he will get someone from tech support to call me back..
so, thats me with yet another huge mobile bill, and spending 30mins standing in a **** smelling phonebox which is 10mins walk from home, to get absoutly nowhere..
can anyone tell me where the hell the uk based broadband tech support is and how I contact them? please? according to customer service i got serveral answers (there isnt one, its in swansea, its in coventry) but still the same overall result (we cant transfer you, or give you a number for them, you have to ring india)
What the hell? last time I had a problem it took me hours of phonecalls and I eventualy got through to someone who told me he was in swansea(iirc) and fixed everything in 10mins, so why all this hassle when someone who is quite blatently not doing anything else (as nobody can get through to him) could just fix things quickly?

Why can't you just be patient and wait for it to happen automatically? The upgrades will happen in the next month or so. Ringing up multiple times just to get the answer you want to hear is not helping you or any other customer trying to get through.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Hi,
Could someone possibly confirm the rough download speed I should be achieving on a 1mb connection. I have just been upgraded from the 300k service and am a little confused by kb/s as opposed to KB/s
I used the speed test page posted in this thread and average speed is 1049 kbits/sec. If thats about right for a 1mb connection then i'm happy, but I just wanted to make sure.
Many thanks

why can't I get upgraded and everyone else can though?
Im not being greedy and wanting to download things, i just want a better upload connection so that I can play xbox live comfortably, why should I pay £25 a month for an inferior connection to other people paying the same price?
and I call on a mobile because I dont have a landline (no need for one usualy) and I dont have any friends that live near by (i live i a house with 6 of my friends)

That is as it should be
The 1meg service should provide you around 1024kilobits (kbs) per second, and this equates to 128kilobytes (kBs)- however you will see slightly lower speeds than this when downloading because of overheads.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Hey Mal,
The point is more that I shouldn't need an engineer visit at all - as OB says, from a financial point of view it doesn't make sense to send an engineer out, give me a brand new box, or a SACM, when my current set up will work absolutely fine... and from my point of view taking the inevitable day (or two depending on whether they make it or not) off isn't the most fun
Didn't get the chance to call them yesterday (for their callback...), will try today...

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)
Oh dear, I knew it would all go pete tong. There I was quite happy with my 1mb service working fine, just waiting for the engineer to come on 4th Arpil to fit my samsung and upgrade to 2mb.... Well, sods law kicked in last night. Pace STB has fried. Fubar, just showing 8888 on the display.
So called faults and they will get an engineer out on Thursday AM. Likelyhood of me having TV service by Friday ? 50-50 ? Likelyhood of having a broadband service over the easter weekend ? <20% ?
On the plus side I may get my samsung earlier than 4th April, but knowing NTL more likely I get another Pace.

It was only a suggestion You don't have to do it...
Well seen as that you will need a new box, the expense of the engineer will be there, whether or not it's going to be a new SACM (and you keep the pace box for the tv) or a new Samsung they install. There's going to be something "new" i.e. expense, there, either way.

If it is then presumably they don't run in an extra cable if I have a Cable Modem so the 'cabling can't handle it' argument sort of falls over at that point.
Could someone confirm whether I'm correct?
Anyway, I've decided to drop down to 1Mb until all the fuss dies down but after another call to CS I've been told I can't even do that until 4th April! Are they picking on me?

Hi! New to the forum today tho' lurking for a while.
I too live in SE London and rang CS this am (the latest of several calls over the last 2 weeks) to try and get a date to replace PACE STB with a SAMSUNG and was given the SAMSUNG doesn't work in your area ring Sales to get an SACM story this time.
I can't believe cabling is an issue as I believe upgrades were done in this area just over a year ago so that we could be offered BB. Is there anybody on the forum who lives in SE London and has BB working via a SAMSUNG STB?
I would prefer a replacement STB just to be rid of the pesky PACE. I'm not asking for it to be installed yesterday or today, all I want is a date for when the job will be done so no need for CS to make up stories if the real issue is a shortage of SAMSUNGS.

My sentiments exactly. I'm going to play a waiting game after I downgrade to 1Mb and once all the fuss has died down I'll try to get a Samsung box.
I suspect that since none of the things that the Samsung is supposed to be better at e.g. Interactive, VOD etc. are not likely to be available in our area anytime soon NTL don't want to waste a Samsung box on us and have therefore come up with the 'You must have a Cable Modem' BS.
