Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)
Apologies for reposting, but I just want a bit of conformation before ntl T/S closes tonight , the Q below is Ref a T/S phone call to upgrade from 1.5 meg to 3Mb
First result : I got told that it wont go through until midnight tonight (the last time I upgraded, from 600k>1Mb, admittedly a while back, was instant), but he did say it would be upgraded, is this normal? (This was, of course on NTL tech support line).

I can definitly tell that theres a slight difference in the speed but its not 2mb. Im downloading most files and the speed test at the 1mb speed, but the odd files at 250+kb. I'm stil not sure if its the box thats slowing my connection down.
Ps. how do you reboot manually the Terayon?
Thanks in advance..

Turn it off for at least 30secs, then turn it back on. Simple
Also, don't forget monkeybreath's kind offer of help

Yep, as the news article says.
No auto upgrade, as 300k users may want to stay on 300k & benefit from the old 1GB per day usage limit, rather than go up to 1meg, but have a 3GB per MONTH limit.
EDIT: Oh, looks like you can upgrade online, according to ian@huth
EDIT again: LOL, I'm a muppet. The news article does say 300k users can upgrade online anyway - only says they won't get done automatically.

Depends on how long the wait is
Just try the online thingy. Hopefully it will work for you

You are presented at first only with an option to upgrade to 2Mb or 3Mb, but if you continue (ie by clicking 2Mb) after checking your connection it gives the option to upgrade to only 1Mb at the same price with thhe cap.

Does anyone know if the speeds will be upgraded anyway automatically to 3Mb or does the link have to be used?

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)
speed upgrade only applies to new customers as of today unfortunately,as i understand exisiting 750 and 1 meg will be automatically upgraded at a later to be announced date,300 will have to request the upgrade as they will be capped at 3gb d/l's per month, this is what i have been led to believe anyways!

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)
Upgraded to 3Mbit here. Wouldn't let me do it via the webpage (something about the username not being recognised as belonging to the modem), so I phoned up customer services. Waited for three minutes. Spoke to a lovely Scottish lady who took about a minute to upgrade there and then. Asked if I wanted anything else, and if I wanted anyone to ring back tomorrow to make sure everything was okay! Restarted the cable modem, and I just downloaded my first MP3 at 358k/sec
Excellent stuff NTL. I'm really really pleased. You've got my custom for as long as you want it

To be honest my dabble with file sharing has gone a bit boring now - I used to down load quite a bit (no comment on what I downloaded) and the speeds were then important. I visted HMV the other day and it was great to actually look around the store and choose some stuff - like the good old days ....
I know that not everyone who uses these high speeds file shares, nor am I saying that those that do download or share stuff are sharing stuff they should not ... but I just have the feeling that this use is bottoming out and it will take newer / better uses (TV / video / video conference calls with family or similar) to make the best of the new speeds (which will obviously get even faster over the next few years).
I could do with some more upload bandwidth for my website stuff but I can put up with 200k (I think the current 1.5 Mbit service is 250k upload..).
I will be saving around £120 a year
cheers
Mark

Personally, I think until it becomes clear to all that you will never get something for nothing, and in most other walks of life you pay for what you use, then this (your quote) is the reaction you will get. I think people will leave NTL and go to others without CAPS or those with more 'generous' CAPs. But in the end, market forces will dictate an 'averaging' of services through out ISP providers - just look at dial up now for example.......

i'm exactly the same as you Mark, why spend an extra tenner a month for no extra cap?
