And does your CD player allow you to mix different playlists on a whim and add or remove them as your mood takes you? Does it connect to your PC and function as a nifty extra external hard drive?
Does it look damn pretty into the bargain?
Thought not.

Just don't get caught using it, it's illegal in the UK.

Re: FAO Ipod people
Not really but that's something I don't need. And I can make playlists with it actually, just that I don't want to.
It's too expensive for what it is, a 40GB 2.5" HDD is about £40 now, put an external hard drive case on top of that and that's about £50 altogether for a drive you can carry around. So why the extra £100+ for a battery, LCD screen and the ability to play MP3's?

Because it's a damn sexy piece of kit, that's why.
I don't understand how you can compare a CD player, even one that plays mp3 CDs, with a 40gb hard disk-based device. And while I'm sure you can mix playlists and put them on your CDs, I can't believe it's as effortless as doing it with a HDD machine. Plus, of course, an iPod is smaller seeing as it doesn't have to have a CD in it. Does your CD player fit in your inside pocket?

You just cannot put it in your jeans pocket, it's a shame sony lost the plot with MD and decided on different PC and music formats. If I could have had a MD disk drive in my PC 2 years ago I would not have an iPod now. Also it took them a long time to enhance MD to higher volumes of music on the disk.
The big problem with CD portables IMHO is that they are too big, it feels like you are carrying 12in vinyl around.
iPod is to an extent style over substance, but its the same argument with buying cars of travelling business class a Mercedes or Business class seat get you to the same destination at about the same time, they just do it more stylishly.

How many CDs do you have to carry with you so that you have the equivalent amount of songs/albums that an iPod can hold?

Why I oughta........
To be honest, the ipod is sexier than the jukebox - but GB for bucks, the jukebox is a better deal. Lack of fire wire port is a bit of a pain, but not a show stopper.
the juke box is also a little bit bigger than the ipod - especially with the leather case - but not amazingly so...
I know the battery issue with the ipod is not really an issue any more, but the ability just to take the front of the jukebox and replace the battery is a big plus in my opinion.

My iPod cost £250. It allows me to store nearly 8,000 songs on it. Admittedly it only last 6-8 hours on one charge, but I leave it plugged into my PC either at work or home when I am not using it (My work PC is left on 24 hours a day, my home PC is usually on when I am at home) and it charges off those. The PCs would be switched on anyway, so the iPod costs me nothing to run (I don't pay for the electricity at work, and the home PC would probably be using electricity anyway).
Finally, that 8,000 songs is stored on a unit a little bigger than a packet of cigarettes. Even at 600 songs per CD, you would still have to carry 13 discs to match the storage of the iPod. Obviously a CD player is more bulky than the iPod (especially so if you take 13 CDs with you)
The advantages with your CD player are that it can play Audio CDs and because it uses standard batteries, if it should die while you are out and nowhere near a PC, you can just buy another set of batteries. With the iPod, you can't play Audio CDs and if the battery dies, you can't replace it easily..
So, as the saying goes, it's swings and roundabouts. The iPod is more expensive, but gives you more storage in a smaller package. The CD player is cheaper, but bulkier.

I only need to carry one for the tunes I need. Buying an I-Pod would be a total waste of money and space as I would never hit 400MB.

I find it nice to have the choice though. When I was using a CD player, I sometimes found I wanted to listen to a song I left at home.
