Roaming profiles
Hi All
A quick question for you:
I have a site with numerous win2000 pcs. All the users have roaming profiles which work fine. I'm about to upgrade all the pcs and replace them with new pcs running Windows XP SP2. Do i need to change any settings to allow the existing roaming profiles to be used on the new XP machines?
many thanks in advance

Re: Roaming profiles
There should be no problems as its basically the same OS anyway. XP was a upgrade of 2000.

Re: Roaming profiles
Are u running 2000/2003 AD? If so, all changes should be made through group policies. If the server is running NT, then things will be a lot harder.
The profiles will be updated by XP as the user logs on - mostly registry differences between the two OS's. Create a test user account, and use this for compatibility testing. Any bespoke apps will need to be fully tested in an XP SP2 environment. The server will have to have the new XP specific GP loaded, and then fixed (it breaks, but MS knows this, and supplys information and a patch). You will HAVE to do this to control SP2's new firewall features.
Also be aware of folder redirection, because of the size of an XP users profile!
No flame intended here, but saying that "XP is an update of 2k" is quite a sweeping and inacurate statement, they share the same codebase, and some basic features, but the differences are far greater than the likenesses. security policies are totally revamped, ASR is a godsend, stabilty is better, power management is improved, asynchronous fast user logon (can be changed via group policy), and many other differences.

Iirc you set them up on your server in a similar way to any other account but ensuring that the roaming check box is checked in the account properties and then its just a case of ensuring that the users log onto that servers domain, but I only played briefly a couple of years back and the old memory is not what it used to be.

Re: Roaming profiles
If you havent already been on the above sites go to your Active Directory Users and whatever in Adminsitrative Tools, go to the user you want to have one, right click to properties then profile and then enter the path of where the profile is stored e.g. \\ServerName\Location\%USERNAME% or something like that.

Re: Roaming profiles
Does it have to be on a client/server rather than a P2P network then?

Re: Roaming profiles
If you have Windows 2000 or XP with out a server you can do this, not too sure about Windows XP Home. Create the same set of users on each pc with same user name, on one computer under documents and settings share out the user folder and then on the secondary machine(s) just set the profile path to point to this. Right click my computer, manage, users then properties.
