VM transferring email services to Junara

Does anyone have any advice as to how you ‘download’ your emails and move them to a different provider? I presume it’s very easy, but I’ve never had cause to do this previously.

What I would be doing it creating a new email address with Gmail or Microsoft and then forward any really important emails to the new address and then move all my accounts to the new email in the year you get if you pay the 99p

Download Mozilla Thunderbird and use that to move your emails from one provider to another without losing the date and time stamps.

If you just forward the emails to another email address you will lose all the date and time stamps on the original emails.

Well my tests just did not bare that out although it was outlook to outlook different address but all the dates were there. I can not test from Virgin but from outlook it works just fine

Tested from webmail Gmail to outlook and all the info is there so I dunno what you are doing WildBill

Another option would be to import your emails into outlook using pop or whatever VM uses Imap maybe

It depends how you do it? Say you have xyz@oldvmaddress.com and you have created a new xyz@newgmailaddress.com - you open Outlook, or Thunderbird or the Gmail application and connect to both of these addresses.

You can now select all of the messages in your @oldvmaddress's inbox and drag them to the inbox for the @newgmailaddress.com, then the dates, email headers etc will be retained. However if you 'forward' emails from the old inbox to the new address, then the threads will all appear to be dated 'today'. Then repeat with 'Sent Items' and any other folders.

You then need to start informing all of your contacts and companies you do business with that your address has changed.

Microsoft have an annoying habit of calling different things, the same name. Outlook refers to (two different) applications for accessing email and also the underlaying mail infrastructure (xyz@outlook.com), so when you say you went 'outlook to outlook', it's unfortunately not clear as to what you mean.

Outlook desktop app to Outlook desktop app and to be honest the OP could just just set it up to pull the VM email into that and it will just sync all folders and then from there you can move everything to your new address. I have 5 email account pulling into my outlook desktop app and one of them is Gmail that in turn pulls multiple legacy email addresses that did used to include ntlworld.com mail . So all my email is synced into Outlook desktop app and then I back up system images so never have to do clean installs so it is all very safe

If they do not want to do it using Outlook app just make sure your VM email has no 2FA and you can just pull it all into gmail. I overcomplicated my answer as it appears plenty of others have too

I use Thunderbird’s to move messages between email address whilst maintains the timestamps. If you just press the “forward” button you will end up with loads of emails bearing today’s date so will no longer be in date order.

As I said just import the whole mail box into outlook or gmail or thunderbird

This is probably the quickest way to download them.
The alternative is transferring them from old provider to new provider, without having a local copy.

I think this is a horrible way for VM to treat its customers. Although I do use Thunderbird with POP3, occasionally I need to find something specific, so I do a detailed search on VM's sever. In fact, VM's search is great.

I have countless numbers of friends and businesses that use my VM emails; so for me to switch to (say) Gmail would be a nightmare.

For a long time now, Virgin removes the email from ex-customers (ie those that switch to another broadband). That itself is wrong and the regulator should have stopped it.

Moving from Sky or BT to VM, one can retain the old email facility but not vice versa. Why!!!

There is still so many unanswered questions about the switch; eg long-term pricing, reliability, retaining the same addresses.

Virgin Media currently runs its own email service, clearly that costs money. They don't want to provide that to anyone they don't have to, and indeed to no one now. They have always been clear that they are related to an account and can switch off any that aren't.

Sky's email is a branded version of Yahoo Mail, and as long as the email addresses are in use Yahoo keeps them open independent of any Sky relationship, similar to it keeping Yahoo email addresses open.

VMs was a branded Gmail for a while but I do think they always made it clear that the email was for when you were a customer so with no disrespect to you but it has always been a bad idea to use it for something that you are likely to want to use ad infinitum as it was never offered as a permanent feature. Comtel/NTL/Virgin media was not my first ISP AOL UKOnline and Screaming.net were back then AOL was my main email but as soon as Hotmail was bought by Microsoft I switched and that became my main for a long time then gmail took over but i still use an @hotmail address that I have had for decades
