Former MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe dies aged 78
The former minister, MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe has died aged 78.
A long-time Conservative politician, she later joined the Brexit Party in 2019, which then became Reform UK.
She also gained public attention for her time on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.
Widdecombe was born in 1947 and entered parliament in 1987 representing the seat of Maidstone in Kent.
She had previously served as a councillor and worked for the Conservative Party.
Under John Major she was an employment minister and then prisons minister.
Widdecombe stood down from parliament in 2010, as the Tories returned to government.
She then re-entered politics in 2019 as a Brexit Party MEP.
In the 2019 general election, she stood again for Westminster in the seat of Plymouth Sutton and Devonport for Nigel Farage's party, but she finished a distant third behind the Tories and Labour.

Breaking: POLICE have launched a murder probe following Ann Widdecombe’s tragic death and are looking for a “white male”.
The 78-year-old former Tory minister turned Reform UK politician was found dead at her Dartmoor home in Devon, on Thursday.

I hope and this may sound weird, but I hope it's either someone who knows her and got into an argument and made a stupid mistake, or it's a home invasion gone wrong.
What I am hoping it's not is a political hit by someone who is mentally disturbed enough to go and murder her because of her political views.

Police have already said that it's not believed to be politically motivated or an act of terrorism.
No doubt Farage will be disappointed.

That does make sense, like or loath her politics, she has been out of the public eye for some time. She would be an unlikely target for a terrorist or politically motivated attack.
A robbery, gone wrong? That’s a more likely scenario. However it’s not good to speculate based on zero real information; I’m sure that the truth will be revealed in any subsequent police statement or trial.

Indeed. All we know at the moment is that a 26 year old white British male is the suspect they're talking to.
She will have made a lot of enemies over the years, but if it was connected to this I don't think they'd have waited until now to do it.
