I found it quite disconcerting for a while when the adaptive cruise control would knock it into neutral and then use the engine start stop to turn off the engine - usually on the motorway going down the hill into Leeds or after going over the Pennines. 1600kg of car freewheeling with the engine off at 70 odd mph seems a bit dangerous to me.

I've only used it once so far and all it's done is kept the same speed as the car in front and braked by itself at a junction.
Surely it's not normal to turn the engine off while driving? Lol

Re: The Happy Thought Thread
You lads have fun with those 'driverless' cars, I'll keep driving mine, thanks
It's all probably changed now (computers lol ) but years ago I think turning the engine off going down hill - or knocking it into neutral - was an offence

I wouldn't touch a Tesla with a barge pole, I wouldn't want a car with a tablet strapped to the dashboard it looks so ugly.

In late 70's we bought an old Saab 96 which was an interesting car to drive as a learner. If I took my foot off the accelerator going down hill it coasted until I put my foot back to re-engage the engine. We only had it for a couple of years and then thankfully, because we had a new baby, we traded it in for a 5 door mk3 Ford Escort.

i felt the same way until i was taken for a ride in it, they are a remarkable car,and the big plus is he can charge it for free at work, the only down side is people step into the road cos they don't hear it coming and don't bother to look.

Re: The Happy Thought Thread
Some car makers are moving back to using switches rather than everything controlled by menus on a screen. Far easier and safer.

I'd go along with that, far safer to have a switch that's basically power on/off, rather than an unresponsive touch screen because the system glitched (at 40mph)

Re: The Happy Thought Thread
How is that reasonable. You can't even watch a dash mounted screen while driving but you can piss about with a center console

I'm glad my Audi A3 2023 still has a good selection of proper switches, none of this touch screen heating control bolox.
