360 coax input

Hi everyone

I’ve just replaced my old Tivo with a free 360 ‘upgrade’.

The incoming cable has a splitter before the router, and the TiVo used the signal from the coax, split off before it went through the router.

There is a coax input socket on the 360, and I connected this up.

However the installation screen for the 360 only accepts ‘Ethernet’ or ‘WiFi’. I have successfully installed using WiFi, but ideally would like to use the coax as before.

Please help.

Hi Andy,
There's no way around this, I'm afraid.

Both boxes uses coax to access live channels etc, but require an internet connection to stream on demand and access apps etc.

The Tivo has a built in modem (so can use the coax cable) to access online services. The 360 doesn't have an inbuilt modem though, and therefore needs to connect to your broadband router using either WiFi or ethernet.

I appreciate thats not the answer you wanted, but I hope it at least provides some clarity.

Might be something to with the old Tivo having its own separate BB 10MB signal, the newer boxes don't. So you'll need to give it some connection to the interweb , wired or wireless. If in doubt get them to come out and sort it if they've enforced a change on you.

Just one question: what is the function of the coax input socket on the 360, if there is no internal modem?

That's to receive the broadcast channels in legacy areas. In the future this will not be needed when VM go fully IPTV and the 360 becomes a streaming only box. That's some years away yet.
