It relates to the theft of customers’ personal and financial information between August 21 2018 and September 5 2018 from the website ba.com and the airline’s mobile app.

The customer always pays one way or another as previous experiences have taught us.

Re: British Airways set to be fined £183m over customer data breach
Good
It's about time larger fines started kicking in due to GDPR changes (even if this is only 1.5% or annual turnover (or one of their 747-400 planes) according to El Reg
IAG we're expecting a lower fine as they had fully complied with the investigation also according to El Reg
Also, IAG's IT GBS is resigning but apparently that's nothing to do with this....
The article is also outdated 380,000 was the original quantity identified, it's been rounded up to nearer 500,000 since.

Who's it actually good for though? It's the customers that are likely going to pay for it due to price rises. BA get a bad name for themselves and the only people to 'win' are those that stole the information in the first place. While I don't disagree that companies should take better care of our data, it just seems the only ones to win from this are the hackers.

Seems this is a proposed fine. BA have an appeal right which they are going to exercise. Not cut and dried yet.

Indeed it would not surprise me if the fine was reduced significantly upon appeal.

If they increase charges then don’t use them, in most other cases there’s alternative carriers and routes available.
I refuse to use BA for work as their service is utter crap.
As we move forward in an ever increasingly connected world companies have to start taking data security seriously. The very fact it was a known exploit that can be protected & secured against (iirc) speaks volumes of their security teams & pen testing processes

Unfortunately true, it should have been the full 4% and no ability to appeal
That would make companies sit up and take notice

Marriott is a well known one (and yes, i've stopped using them for business accomodation)
Since the introduction of GDPR one of the components is that companies now have a very limited time to report breaches to the relevant parties. otherwise the fines get even bigger !!
