Cloud recording looks to be coming to VM.

The settlement of the long running dispute between VM and ITV contains an agreement to work together to enable recordings in the cloud.

To my knowledge, this is the first concrete indication that VM intend to follow this route.

Cable companies abroad have tried this in the past, but had to abandon it due to complaints from rights holders.

Maybe this is why the V6 didn't come with more recording space as many assumed and hoped it would?

What do people think about this? I think it seems like a good idea, my only concern will be that during internet outages we won't be able to access our recordings. At present, if the TV or BB services go down, at least we can watch recordings previously made.

Maybe they will give you option to save to the box or the cloud or both.

Well, if it can be done using the existing boxes, hopefully we will be able to still record to the V6 as well.
This way people would still have something to watch in case of the internet going down.

AIUI, VM telephony will be moved over to the internet, so, if the internet goes down, all three services would be affected

			I guessing here but:
When they talk about recordings in the cloud, I don't think they actually record the program. They will just keep a record in your profile that you have marked a program as recorded. Access to recorded programs will be from a providers (i.e. ITV) central or regional library pointed to via your profile. These recordings will probably have an expiry date, perhaps 1 month or 1 year. TV companies or Virgin will have the ability to inject advertising into the program that you can't skip when playing back, which is possibly why the TV companies are warming to the idea!!!!

I not sure this correct but I surmising based on current technology and that 4+million customers with 1TB of storage each in the cloud is not going to be cheap, even if the data is de-duplicated? Just think about it, 4+million press record on Coronation Street at the same time or all record 6 programs at once, it would saturated the internet to the cloud!

I believe you are right that the programme isn't actually recorded to the cloud. It is more a bookmark than a recording.

Unfortunately, I am sure you are correct - not much good if it has time limitation - it will be just like on demand.

I saw a couple of minutes of a program a few months ago, it was the 3rd episode so I recorded the rest of the series and downloaded the 1st 2 from catch-up.

By time we got around to watching it the downloaded first 2 episodes had disappeared - not happy

I had assumed that only one copy would need to be made and that all customers would access the same copy??

Yes, that's one thing I don't like about On Demand and why I prefer to record everything.

Though I did read somewhere that Sky were to incorporate it into their add on packages. The author felt that it would be £5 in line with the others, which would be cheaper than the standard price if it comes to fruition.

If so, perhaps VM will follow suit??

Yeah, I've had 2 trials of Netflix and wasn't overly impressed with it either time. The odd original or exclusive program/series but a whole load of repeats.

A bit like UKTV, really :-)
