How much are SACMs?
I've been pondering recently.
How much do SACMs cost NTL/Telewest to buy - how much for Samsung or Pace STBs?
Anybody got any answers, it'd be much appreciated!

Re: How much are SACMs?
The NTL Ambit cable modems are said to cost only around a tenner for them to buy. Don't know about STBs.

Re: How much are SACMs?
Puts it all into perspective really when they're theoretically charging you £5 a month to rent one, doesn't it?

I don't think that todays cost of a CM is relevant. Rental of a cable modem is included in the monthly charge nowadays but who is to say how much of the charge is attributable to rental of it. The £5 figure stems back to the days when cable modems cost well over £100 when they first started renting them instead of you having to buy your own.

Spot on Ian.
From memory the option was to purchase the modem from Global Direct for £150 or take the option to rent for the additional £5 per month.

Re: How much are SACMs?
The cost of the engineer's time and motoring to get the modem to you and install it is a substantial portion of the install cost - the modems themselves are as cheap as any other mass-produced hardware these days. STBs are obviously more, they've got more bits and a smaller production run.

Re: How much are SACMs?
In your rental you are also paying for "insurance" for when/if you call out a fault engineer. I think the last time I heard a pace box was about £250 and a samsung was £512.:t u:

Re: How much are SACMs?
From the investor day brief it lists cable modems as £23.00 and STB's as £113. It doesn't differentiate between the models so may be a rough guideline.

Re: How much are SACMs?
We need to differentiate between costs ntl pay and costs customers pay for replacement.
Currently to customers SACMs are charged at £60, Set Top Boxes are charged at £150.

Re: How much are SACMs?
Why?
Why do you ponder this & want to know?
It's been discussed many times here too.

I'd largely agree, aside from the fact that in real terms then the cost of BB has risen from £19 to £25 (if we're not talking about rental of kit).

Re: How much are SACMs?
And in pretend terms, what's the point anyway?
