The first generation firmware used XBMC (aka Kodi) and was alleged to be a bit of a hack. The later versions use the common Reference Design Kit shared with Comcast and Time Warner Cable and is reputedly rather better in design.

German Wikipedia (auto translation) suggests it has a "consistently positive" reception there.

The reason I ask is TiVo is America do similar to sky with the TiVo mini and wasn't sure if virgin was adopting that

No. There is a currently an early pilot in three regions. The pilot will be extended into a few more regions once the final software is ready.

Provided the pilot is successful, there will then be a phased rollout to the remaining regions. This typically takes 3 to 4 weeks.

Maybe they interviewed him two weeks ago?

Do you have a rough idea about how long it is likely to reach the end of the pilot period, assuming no major hiccups, spiderplant?

Regarding Horizon: Virgin and TiVo signed a new agreement a year ago that has a couple of years still to run (it expires 2018 - story here)
But that could be for existing services, not new.

We all need some kind of software on the boxes we have, for them to run. So, VM had to do something when the current TIVO contract expired last year.

Most interesting. Very surprised LG used such an open sourced platform as XMBC for what is meant to be a closed platform.

Regarding RDK, this is the reason why I think Horizon will be launched in the UK. It's the standard being used across LG's operations, Comcast's and others. There is a much bigger pool of companies contributing to to the RDK stack which brings down costs, whereas TIVO is shut off to all but themselves.

That's what I was wondering , the Tivo extension could have been for the continuation of its software on existing boxes.

Could the new STB be on the Horizon platform ?

It's usually 3 or 4 weeks once we're into "proper" pilot, but I don't know when that will start.

I don't see how with the extended tivo contract ending in a few years and tivo themselves are now struggling in the States, that VM would launch a brand new tivo. Doesn't make sense, yet most here are saying a new tivo will be launched. Has Vm themselves ever said that....?

Liberty, as already mentioned, contribute and co-own a standardised software bundle called RDK which Horizon runs on. I don't see how Liberty would invest in this and then run a completely different system, tivo, in parallel to their own stuff.

200 odd companies are involved in RDK, so why bother with tivo now?

RDK's website:

Re apps, Liberty have their own Netflix-ish app called MyPrime. Can only be a matter of time before it launches on VM. It's on LG's other cablecos.

At some point VM UK and VM Ireland's services will be integrated. So we should really look here for pointers:
