VM Router : New router for 300 Mbps service?

I was looking to find out what the throughput of the WAN is on my Linksys EA4500 router today and found a good site with good information and comparison.

With the virgin service soon to offer 300 Mbps I found that my router can only deliver 254 Mbps, so a new router is on the cards to go with the sh3 in modem mode.

I have never had any problems with any Linksys routers i have owned so i am interested in the EA6900 which should see me for the forceable future with a throughput of 923 Mbps WAN to LAN at £99 on amazon. Although the NETGEAR R7000 nighthawk looks good and ranks higher but another £40, the maximum silmilatanus connections are more than double.

I was rightfully recommended from this forum to use my own router which was excellent advice, what thoughts have people got on this subject or does the router you use now deliver throughput for the 300 Mbps service?

I am surprised dude. I googled it and checked it myself because I expected it to be a lot higher than that. It is a damn shame because the EA4500 was la crème de la crème when it came out and it is a shame you need to replace it so quickly. The EA6900 looks like a cracking all round replacement because it has got ac wireless as well and the way things are going atm everything is going to be wireless in a few years.

Have a look at the asus ac56u it maxes out my 300 meg connection with no problems at all

My Asus RT-N66U is around 730Mbps throughput

Hi, I thought the N66U has a Bottleneck of 200 as it only has a single processor

Those numbers are always raw throughput. As soon as you tack on PPPoE, the numbers plummet.


Sorry i might be wrong as I'm on BT and i don't think virgin use PPPoE.

You're generally right, infidel, however I can't say that it seems to make much of a dent in the router I have here. It can handle Cut-Through Forwarding / NAT Acceleration level 1 with PPPoE.

Who knows, evidently someone decided it'd be a good idea to implement PPPoE encapsulation and decapsulation in hardware and added it to the NAT acceleration.

I believe there are some other consumer routers that do so, too.

The ac56u will give you 300+ Mbps via wifi to your laptop if you have a decent AC card installed i think it can be had for around £80 now with a 3 year warranty

That's over 5ghz. The highest reported I've seen is 215Mb for it, though more usually lower.

The N66U can only get full speed with 200Mbps when using Asus or Asuswrt-Merlin firmware with Broadcom fast nat CTF function enabled, which means you have to disable IP accounting, QOS and some other features of router firmwares, wasn't possible with Tomato for me. I have no doubt the snb benchmarks are true, but achieved in a test setup with very fast servers on local Gigabit network, but there are are some incredible speeds reported from countries with Gigabit Internet connections. The newer dual-core ARM (wireless AC) routers are much higher CPU power and should be considered if buying new, but for now my N66 is fine....
