Make sure you're connecting on the 5GHz band.

Re: wifi speeds with asus ac3200
What speed are you getting? I have an Asus RT AC-66U and have got a speed of 140Mbits/sec 6 feet away from the router using a Samsung S5. This is on the 5Ghz band

Re: wifi speeds with asus ac3200
what device are you doing the speed test on? I am on 200mbits but my Galaxy S3 won't do more than 60mbits because of the limitations with the phone. You can get a brand spanking new router with the latest wifi technology (like mu-mimo) but the devices connecting to the router have got to support the same technology on their wireless nic in order to be able to take advantage of it.

I'm getting 189 meg with a sony Z3 compact and the SH 2AC so it's probably the device you are using.

Exact model of laptop would be useful along with the make of the wifi card

Re: wifi speeds with asus ac3200
I have an AC68U and using an app on my iPhone 6 I've managed to bench over 250Mb/s so your router should have no problem with any of Virgin's current speeds.
I've also benched over 400Mb/s with my iPad Air 2.

Re: wifi speeds with asus ac3200
This is a speedtest from my laptop using the 5GHz (Just to note I have overutilization in my area so speed is not the best)
This is my set up for wifi

Re: wifi speeds with asus ac3200
I had QoS enabled on my Nighthawk x6, when I set it up it did a speed test itself and as the BB was overutilised it saw a 70Mb speed. The router then managed the connection not to exceed 70Mb.
I tweaked the router config to a 160Mb limit and it works fine , subject to device limits. VM have upgraded stuff in our postcode so we get a better connection now. It took me a while to figure out what was throttling the connection though as it did it in auto setup mode.
