I use my phone as a wireless hotspot and watch it on my tablet. The 3g/4g speeds are quick enough to watch it

What a loss-leading game changer this could be. I can envisage some very cheap deals becoming available for Sky customers, and even better deals for those out contract on other networks too. Free mobiles, calls, texts and data to anyone on tv phone and BB. Or free sky sports for 12 months (channel and/or app) to new mobile customers. They have so many ways to market this and challenge the quad play of BT and VM.

I really dislike Sky, but they know how to woo pay tv customers so they join them. Just look at the offers on their website, free Bb, £150 gift cards to people who recommended by their mates plus another two or three deals as well.

I can see them being extremely happy to play the long game and lose many, many millions in the short term on this.

I think the box will definitely be 4K ready. VM have to show they are keeping up with technology and the competition.

Just having a bigger hard drive and more tuners won't be enough to keep unhappy customers or win new ones.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

iPlayer is currently a maximum 3.2Mbps 720p 25fps using AVC / H.264 encoding. BBC 3 via cable was 1080i 50fps using MPEG 2 - no idea of the average bitrate, but think was said before that BBC on VM is higher than Freeview or Freesat even accounting for the different encoding.

According to, http://en.digitalbitrate.com/dtv.php...live=9&lang=en, BBC 1 on Freeview averages 5Mbps with a max of around 14Mbps with AVC / H.264 encoding.

So yes, not as good as broadcast.

iPlayer on TiVo (and other Connected TV platforms) is now higher than that I believe:

Quote:
The Media Services team worked closely with BBC R&D to define 14 video profiles and 5 audio profiles that can be combined to make ABR (Adaptive Bit-Rate) sets for all supported devices, from mobile phones connected over a cellular network, which gets 56Kbit/s stream to ensure video will continue to play even with slow connections, to computers and connected TVs, which will now get up to 5Mbit/s 720p video at 50fps.
More technical detail on the new profiles for iPlayer is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2015/07...or-bbc-iplayer

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

Ah thanks - I missed that announcement. Unfortunately I guess going to 1080 opens up all sorts of interlacing issues so might take longer...

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016)

They do actually have it ready:
Quote:
In addition a high bit-rate (8000kbps) 1920x1080, interlaced at 25fps, full HD encode is generated, but has not yet been made available. It can be enabled for TV devices in the future.
