VM fibre to the home
Can I just check that I'm right in thinking that apart from the 1Gbit trial areas VM don't do fibre to the home? And that pretty much every in to the home TV/Internet connection is coax?

Re: VM fibre to the home
Also with FTTD trial areas you can't have a phone line so the offers are pretty rubbish.

Absolutely correct. There are almost no true FTTH providers, but they do exist in some areas.

Actually it all depends what you mean by Fibre to the Home.
Virgin have started network additions using FTTH technology.
http://about.virginmedia.com/press-r...roadband-boost
The main advantage for this currently is that it allows less disruption during the build, as the full fibre install allows for narrow trenching.
These installs include a Fibre to Coax box at each house (basically a smaller version version of what other areas have further 'upstream' in a street cabinet), and the internal install is still currently coax. This allows for the same broadband and TV kit to be installed as any other Virgin Media area.

Re: VM fibre to the home
if that works out hopefully they could start doing that everywhere. Having fibre straight to the house would sure be sweet and you would have thought it will be a necessity in 10 years time.

That's only for new build or like in this instance an area that wasn't cabled in the first place. Existing build will be upgraded using RF amplifiers at present, eventually fibre to each cabinet will replace most RF amps

Nah no need for it in 10 years time.
Bandwidth consumption per household is well within the reach of hybrid technologies for the foreseeable.
Check out the below video, starts at the relevant time.
