I tend to use FF but need IE for some sites with weak, old encryption that only IE accepts and Chrome is useful for Netflix/Amazon when I don't want Silverlight and on Linux where you can't.

That's a bit premature, some sites/apps are still dependent on it. Why on else have they included it with Windows 10 ?

It's only versions 8, 9 and 10 that are not being updated. The current version, 11, is still being updated.

Well that's ok then, just update to the latest version.
Only a matter of time before they dump 11 too though. IE is clunky rubbish anyway, but some apps/ plug ins won't work with anything else.

It'll be interesting to see whether IE11 will go out of support before Windows 8.1 does, which is currently in 2023

It's possible that going forward IE11 support will be based on the platform - so IE11 on Windows 7 will stop getting updates in 2020, and then on Win 8.1 in 2023.
If I had to guess I'd expect that IE11 in Windows 10 will be aligned to the Windows 8.1 support life cycle, as it's basically the same version that's in Win 8.1 (minus the full screen / Metro version)

This is something I seem to have missed.
It seems IE9 will be supported on Vista until April 2017 which is when Vista's support ends. This makes much more sense!
