Honours system need reform

The honours system, as it stands, need a thorough overhaul. For years, the incumbent government uses it to reward it cronies and civil servants just "doing their job":

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-35203154

What is bizarre, is that the award has it's own class system: is "Dame" Barbara Windsor more worthy than Mrs Deborah Louise Bone MBE, Mental Health Nurse?

The whole thing should be scrapped and replaced by something more open, honest and worthy ..

Re: Honours system need reform

Needs reforming. Needs scrapping and replacing with nothing imo. These gongs for sports people and actors are just a sop to us little people to disguise the honours real purpose, to reward cronies loyalty with monetisable honours, Cecil the lollipop man who has done it for 35 years is never made a sir but some poxy civil servant that knows where the bodies are buried is.

Just think, that if there's an extinction level event these people will be among the first in line to be saved

Re: Honours system need reform

A lot of countries have these kinds of State decoration. The Legion De Honor in France, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the United States, the Order of Merit in Germany and obviously Knighthoods in the United Kingdom.

There really isn't any need to get rid of it. We should just change how people are awarded them to be independent of the political system. Even the connection to the past is fine, no reason not to leverage our own history.

Re: Honours system need reform

I dunno, I find it interesting sometimes.

for example, sometimes you see say a footballer gets an honour, and you think "eh he gets paid a shed load of money to kick a football about, what's that about?"
but then you read it's for services to charity, he's donated lots of time, money, foundations etc, but hasn't shouted about it, so he's been doing great work for years, without trying to get noticed because of it.

Huff Post had an interesting article about celebs who have refused them,

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2015...n_8895194.html

ppl like French and Saunders and Jim Broadbent, were among those who had refused them saying they hadn't done anything to deserve them, they were just having a laugh doing comedy, acting etc.

Others refused them for more political reasons etc. it's quite an interesting read.

Remember they're not just awarded to celebs for being good at what they do, there's "ordinary people" getting them, so it's nice they get some recognition for whatever good they are doing.

I see Dave has thrown his weight around and got one of his chums a title.

I still can't work out how that sex shop woman got a title either.

Re: Honours system need reform

According to the BBC, it was because
Quote:
Ms Gold, who lives in Oxted, has set up the WOW network, which supports and celebrates women in business and through which she personally mentors female entrepreneurs.

She is also vice-president of the Children's Trust and is a supporter of both the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC) and the Retail Trust.
She didn't get a 'title', she wasn't made a Lady or a Dame, she was awarded a CBE.

That "sex shop woman" is very successful. She only offered items for sale, if you want to judge her, then you need to judge those that purchased what she was selling.

Re: Honours system need reform

Another utterly pointless aspect of British life.
If it was just recognising ordinary people quietly doing charity work it would be fine. These honours and titles can be bought by being ruling party cronies or by simply having money. Lynton Crosby for goodness sake - what on earth has he done apart from what he was hired to do?

I'm not sure if she's connected to Labour, but you may be right. Maybe she helped Labour invent WMD's and invade foreign country's ?
