VM Router Help with Cisco Dual Wan Setup

Dear All,

I am trying to configure a Cisco Rv325 dual WAN router with one of incoming connections a VM 50MB Business with one (as far as I know) static IP.
I had this working on my "old" Draytek Dual Wan router, but the same settings, seem unable to get a connection on the SuperHub.
Anybody have any experience of this configuration.
The other Wan is BT connection which uses PPoe and is working fine.
I am by know means a "network" guy, so would appreciate any help with the VM setup ?

have you statically assigned the ip address and subnet mask to the port?

I think it would be helpful if you posted the settings you have done in both your router and the SH, otherwise how do we know where you are going wrong?

It all should be basically the same as before, perhaps you've just overlooked one setting.

Yes Wan 2 on the Cisco has been assigned the Static IP in the range 92.234.9.*** and the Gateway is in the same range
DNS server are VM own
Subnet mask is 255.2550.2550.0

Firewall on the SH is on and set to low with IPSec pass through on

Any other setting I should change ?

I'm beginning to suspect I'll need 6 Static IP to get this working

Oops bad typing, as it happens I have just changed the subnet mask to 255.255.255.240 and I "think" it working !

If you want the publicly routable IP to be on the Cisco then yes you need 6 IP routed subnet option from VM, but that would have been the same with the Draytek. Unless you were double natting

Thanks for the reply, can I ask, is there a reliable "modem: mode on the 50MB VM Router if I get rid of the Static IP. I presume if there is, there is no reason not to move to the 152 MB Business service. I can probably get away with using dynamic DNS for the inbound services I need, since I've outsourced my email server ?

if you move to the current 152 MB/s business service you will get a service that is technically the same as residential, but with a different (better!) repair service.

Modem mode works on that, and in fact will work on the 50 Mb/s service if you do not have a static IP.

Then you can put the SH in modem mode and have the public (dynamic) IP address on the router behind it.

The alternative is to have a routed subnet option and then you can easily assign a publicly routable IP address to the router. This is what I do.

VM Business are due to launch new services in the first quarter of next year (they have said Feb) that will offer fixed IP services on 100, 200 and 300 Mb/s options

Thanks for the reply, the only reason I am setting up the dual WAN in the first place, is that the 50 MB static IP service , since my router was replaced , became horribly unreliable, losing settings on a regular (36 hour) basis. Do you think it's better to go for the 152 MB service, or upgrade to a routed subnet and upgrade to a faster connection next year ? I intend to keep Virgin and BT , as uptime is more important than raw speed.

Hard to be sure- but I do find the 50 Mb/s service in routed subnet mode 100% reliable. However I have seen reports here of others have the problem of lost settings. I have not experienced that problem. I had a theory the it maybe the fact in routed subnet mode the Superhub is not performing any NAT. I wondered if that was a factor over time in it losing it's settings.

If you can live with the current service until February that's when you should see an improvement (hopefully!) and can have fixed IP on the faster speeds.

At least one person here has bought a cheap time clock and has the power cut to the superhub once a day for a minute to reset it which seems to keep it working well.

Either way though if you need to get a publicly routable IP address on your Cisco router you will need a routed subnet or the non Static option so you can use modem mode....

So as a follow up, it would appear that the static IP assigned at the moment on my account was in the range 62.30.100.*** and the engineer had originally set it in the range 92.234.9.*** so I wonder why this ever worked ? Was the IP address somehow tied to the Mac address of my old Draytek router ? Very strange. I have an engineer coming this morning, so I'm sure he'll be able to enlighten me :-)
