Named and shamed: London employers failing to pay the minimum wage

http://www.itv.com/news/london/2015-...-minimum-wage/

To me, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Employers come out with this rubbish that, if they paid the minimum wage, it would cost more money - which they could not afford

Total and utter rubbish. Profits would not be effected. As with some retailers charge over the prices anyway - in fact my son pays £4.50 for a cappuccino. So how much profit does a shop make on that.

And to name and shame those that don't pay, brilliant

Re: This is tip of the iceberg

Arthur, I agree with you - employers should pay the minimum, actually the living, wage.

However, it is common sense if you pay out more wages, your profits are less*, so we will have to differ on that statement....

*if you bring in £100,000, and pay out £60,000, profit is £40,000 - if paying the minimum/living wage, and this means you pay out £70,000, profit is £30,000.

Profits affected, reduced by £10,000.

This is what worries me about the tax credits overhaul and the push for £9ph

As for the thread topic, most people probably knew they were paid less than minimum but feared for their jobs should they kick up a fuss, in an already dire job market they probably felt a bit less was better than nothing at all. I've seen companies pay minimum wage but skim hours instead. Employees swearing they'd worked more hours than there payslip says.

Source for the hours being skimmed: Myself at my previous employer, security work that also did a lot of other illegal things like exploitation of workers and blatant racial discrimination, asking two black males to pull 48 hour shifts every other weekend... Myself and colleagues at the time calculated the hours being skimmed by matching payslips with all the on site SIA log books that require to sign in and out, it's an offence to tamper with these as they're subject to audit at any given time by the SIA. Typically pages were ripped out soon after.

if one of my sons paid £4.50 for a cup of coffee they would be getting a talking to from mum and dad [ even at 28 and 25 years old ]

Nobody is forced to buy cappuccino at £4.50. More fool those who do, especially if they then whine about how little money they have in their pockets or they can't live on their meagre benefits.

re: Named and shamed: London employers failing to pay the minimum wage

£4.50 is a bit steep anywhere. Most coffee in London is around £2.80/£3.00 for a Flat White or Cappuccino. I can't imagine that anywhere else in the country could get away with charging more than places in Shoreditch/The City/Central London do. Maybe there are some really posh places in Mayfair/South Kensington which wouldn't let the likes me of in that charge more...

Pop into Wetherspoons and get a large cappucino or latte for £1.70.

There's no excuse for any employer not to be paying at least the minimum wage. Those who think they can wangle a lower rate should be prosecuted.

Or choose to save a load of money to spend on better/more important things by making your own or drinking something much cheaper.

Hard to get a Cappuccino done without the proper milk frother thingy. Proper coffee machines are expensive and you end up with just a very milk expresso if they're not careful.

I might be missing the point here...

Yes you are a bit. Nobody has to buy coffee. It's not an essential, just a personal choice. You pays your money and takes your choice but for those struggling on low incomes I'd say spend your money on more important things.

Entirely agree with Osem, for a change.

Coffee is hardly something that anyone has a monopoly on. I have no idea where this £4.50 price for a cappuccino comes from. Even the 2 Michelin star Le Gavroche in Mayfair doesn't charge that.

You can always listen to the BBC. They take more copies of the Gruniad than any other national paper despite its minuscule circulation.
