Superhub Any news on IPv6 with Virgin Media yet?

Hi,

I have heard that ARIN, has run out of IPs and can't see RIPE being that far behind.

So I was wondering if/when or any news on Virgin Media enabling IPv6 access?

RIPE ran out of /8s in 2012

They're on the case. Should see something in the not too distant as they will be running out of IPv4 addresses in the private / RFC1918 range.

Thanks for this. I'm actually quite optimistic now that I've seen they're actually working on it.

Maybe I'm a bit of a pessimist but I really didn't think Virgin Media were too fussed about IPv6.

They aren't but they know it has to be done, largely for private addresses as mentioned.

Most (if not all) ISP's will use a workround until it is absolutely neccessary to make the change.

The IPv6 scare has been around for at least 4 years, the fact is you probibly won't know when the change takes place as ISP's will be ready for it, they should have everything in place to do so.

I haven't actually seen a single ISP use a workaround. Sky are going straight to dual-stack, 50% of their customer base are there, BT are going dual-stack, VM are going dual-stack. I will have dual-stack available to me by the end of the year via my TalkTalk Business reseller.

Trials of a workaround were done, but I am not aware of any fixed-line provider that has deployed CG-NAT.

yeah they all seem to be heading for dual stack but it wouldnt surprise me if we may start seeing cg-nat on low end packages and isp's using a non shared ipv4 ip as a selling point for more expensive packages

I guess that home routers would need to be changed if they don't support IPv6?

I can't imagine anyone having a router that doesn't. I think pretty much all decent routers for the last 5 years have been ipv6 ready and given the pace tiers have been changing with the free upgrades and speed doubling program, people have been to get new router to accommodate the demand on increased wan to lan throughput.

Well, only if you want/need IPv6. The nice thing about a dual stack solution is that it works for devices that don't have IPv6 support. You just get what you have now.

I don't see IPv4 going anywhere any time soon. Virgin has plenty of spare IP's, probably as a result of so many cable mergers and their customer base isn't expanding enough for it to be an issue. Getting IPv6 to customers is more about solving the internal addressing issue that Igni describes and ensuring that customers have access to the IPv6-only internet, whenever that starts to be a thing.

ipv6 internet is already a thing, but a lot of people think it only matters if broadband isp's have spare ipv4, thats wrong. There is some services now ipv6 only as some places are already out of ipv4.

Indeed, I was referring to the services that are only available on IPv6. I can't name a single one off-hand.

Lots of non-UK and non-fixed-line providers use CG-NAT though. Mobile broadband has been using it since day one.
