this one made me laugh

But won't this cause extra congestion?
Unlikely. People using your connection are already Virgin customers, the bandwidth they're using on the shared wifi is just bandwidth they're not using at home.

so everyone turns of their devices when leaving home and never leaves things downloading? you know like ps4's that can download whilst in standby
VM in 2016 is going to be some fun, I need to get some popcorn, speed doubling + public wifi, congestion party time.

UPC has had Horizon WiFi throughout Europe for a while; Comcast, Cogeco Cable and others in North America. It is not a significant contributor to capacity issues. The WiFi signal is rarely that good.
People browsing / streaming on the WiFi service while their PS4 or whatever downloads at home doesn't really add to network load. They would be browsing / streaming at home, so they've just moved that usage to the WiFi.
The only time this would be excepted would be if the home download were entirely saturating the customer's bandwidth.
If VM chose they could also deprioritise the WiFi traffic in local areas so it only gets the left over bandwidth after home customers' flows have been served. If they experience issues this is an easy step.

Devices they've left at home are irrelevant, the point is the bandwidth they're using on the shared wifi is bandwidth they would normally be using at home. They don't cart a second PS4 with them and download the same games and updates, do they?

Re: FAQ on Virgin Media's WiFi Sharing
Anyway, the whole thing's up in the air now because anyone who factory resets their SH2 will be regressed to v1.01.29.
I.e. the party's off for now. No formal statement yet from VM - they are no doubt trying to conjure up some face saving words.

Incidentally, it's the opposite for mobile networks. I for one use more 3G/4G data when I'm abroad than when I'm in the UK.

Nope.
I already have a perfectly good D615 (from Virgin) doing my Wifi.
I dont need it from the modem (or the SkyHub, which also has its Wifi turned off).

Re: FAQ on Virgin Media's WiFi Sharing
If it had gigabit, I'd probably still be using it.

If it had 5Ghz, I'd probably be using 20.

My girlfriends superhub 2 is running V1.01.29 and also appears to be broadcasting a Virgin Media SSID so the hotspot appears to still be running..

A superhub broadcasts a VM SSID by default unless you change it.
