Also I think the assertion that this won't cause extra traffic or congestion is ludicrous, you can't say the person that is lodging on your wi-Fi is creating extra traffic because they arnt at home using their own, what is actually happening is they are using VM instead of their 3G connections so the network traffic at peak times could considerably increase.

No, what is actually happening is they are using VM instead of using VM in a slightly different part of the country.

Not quite. If it wasn't for the fact that there is a hotspot in that location they probably wouldn't be using anything at that time.

However, I agree that this new provision is unlikely to impinge significantly or indeed noticeably on a local network in residential areas. Station and airport hotspots will have been set up with discrete purpose-built network connections.

And when several neighbours cotton on to being to get BB for £5/month on the basis that somebody else nearby is paying the full amount for BB?

How would that work? You have to have a VM login to access the VM WiFi. Or have I misunderstood something?

Via VM mobile. They also have access without having fixed BB.

If you're a Virgin Mobile customer the authentication is via your SIM, so only the device that you've got your SIM in and can access the app (Android and iOS at launch) will work on Virgin Media WiFi.

19. Existing Virgin Media broadband customers who have not opted out of the Virgin Media WiFi service and all Virgin Mobile customers will be able to access the services by configuring their device using their existing Virgin Media password to sign in to access the services. Mobile users can access the service by way of the Virgin Media WiFi application. This will use details from the Mobile SIM card to access to service.

If other people in the area with "proper" BB are having an impact on my speeds and connection, how will yet more people not have any impact.

My gripe is that they would also be getting BB on the cheap for a fraction of what I am paying.

I imagine that the people on Virgin Media WiFi are not at their home having an impact from there with their "proper" BB.

These would be additional BB users using mobile which could even be instead of paying for fixed line BB with VM, BT, etc

Yet this isn't anything new and BT/Sky/etc. don't seem to have this problem. They might get broadband on the cheap, but it'll be exactly that - cheap, slow and not a good experience.

It'll also only work on their mobile.

It's only Virgin Media broadband customers that can use their details to use more than one device per subscription.
