Enforcing standards in the Upper House.

Shocking... or maybe not as shocking compared to what some others might be getting up to...

Re: Enforcing standards in the Upper House.

Nothing surprises me anymore. The upper echelons of politics contain more than their fair share of hypocrites who preach honesty and morality whilst being anything but.

Typical of the low standards amongst politicians nowadays. I sometimes wonder what else could be found from them.

Re: Enforcing standards in the Upper House.

Investigative journalism at its best. No wonder they want to try and muzzle the press. The vindictive way that the Met and CPS have hounded reporters just for telling the truth that they don't want you to hear is sickening when the police should be looking at parliament much more closely.

Drugs, sleaze, paedo rings, expenses scandals, it just goes on and on. Where are the prosecutions?

Some say it's all down to due process and I'm sure there's a lot in that. However, I'm increasingly of the opinion that there are certain very big fish in the frame for some truly appalling behaviour and there are those who'll be quite happy for proceedings to be delayed until time takes its toll of these people in one way or another.

Re: Enforcing standards in the Upper House.

Let's not tar every member of the Lords..some do the job that they are supposed to very well. Same goes for SOME MPs.. let's just be specific about who are the bad apples.

I agree. Not so many years ago I remember Baroness Miller posting on this very forum in support of the opinion against Phorm which proposed the interception of internet traffic at ISP level. It was support that was very much appreciated at the time especially as the Commons seemed to have been struck dumb.

It is unfair to lump the innocent together with the guilty.

Re: Enforcing standards in the Upper House.

It'd help greatly to discover who are the bad apples if there wasn't so much closing of ranks going on. IMHO turning a blind eye to or deliberately helping to cover up wrongdoing are just as bad. Wrongdoing within the Lords might range from the most serious offences at one end of the spectrum to 'signing in' purely to claim expenses at the other with no intention to contribute anything to proceedings. Let's not tar all bad apples with the same brush, some bad apples are more rotten than others.

The only complaint I have is that he's financing it with my money. So should be booted out of the house.

Other than that, crack on, so to speak.

Re: Enforcing standards in the Upper House.

There is another issue which is relevant when people in positions of power put themselves in situations where they may be vulnerable to blackmail and could therefore have their decision making unduly influenced. We certainly can't expect our politicians to be as pure as the driven snow and people are entitled to some privacy, but I don't think such people ought to be engaging in dubious activities until they're out of office in which case there'll be little or no possible conflict with their public duties. Fat chance of any of that happening however...

Re: Enforcing standards in the Upper House.

In the context of the 'happenings' this publisher prints a meaningless story and negates those who push through such activity? Yes I'm clearly not in. You see I don't know a women who knows a man who knows somebody else.

Re: Enforcing standards in the Upper House.

Quote:

Lord Sewel has resigned from the House of Lords as fresh details emerged from a video allegedly showing him snorting cocaine with prostitutes.

The former deputy speaker has written a letter to Parliamentary officials apologising for the “pain and embarrassment” he has caused.

It came on the day more lurid details emerged from the footage, including Lord Sewel's boast that he had sex with a married BBC presenter "in the attic".

The woman, who was named in the footage but not by the Sun, told the newspaper his claims were "categorically untrue".
