Windows 8 Task Manager

Hi,

Getting myself confused and that's easy ....

Windows 8 Task Manager and specifically the Networking Tab.

This shows a Mbps figure for throughput and I'm trying to relate this to the 152 Virginmedia tier.

So, if you maxed out a 152 tier, what figure should show in Windows, providing the hardware can handle it of course.

Would it be around 20Mbps or so .. ??

Another confusion between megabytes and megabits. Anyway the answer is 152 Mbits or possibly even higher.

ya, mine doesn't actually give me a numberical figure for the throughput, it shows utilisation as a % of the link speed which is 1gbit (remember it is the speed which your adapter is connected to the router, i.e. a 1gbit nic connected to a 1gbit port on the router using a patch cable which is capable of 1gbit).

Long story short it is in mbits so don't be put off. I am uploading at my max speed atm which is 100% as fart as VM are concerned but Windows is only saying 1.5% (1.41mbits). If I were downloading at max speed it would only show 15% because 150mbits is 15% of 1000).

On Windows 8 it doesn't show a % of anything and it does not make any reference to link speed. It shows only a numerical figure for throughput, either in Mbps or Kbps or Gbps, etc.

The 152 tier is meant to be 152Mbps so Windows should show 152Mbps. 20Mbps would be the 20Mbps tier, which no longer exists.

Technically the 152Mbps tier is provisioned at around 165Mbps IIRC so you may get up to that. If you only get 20Mbps on the 152Mbps tier you have a serious connection problem.

Interestingly 165Mbps equates to 20.625MBps (MegaBytes/sec) I wonder if that is what the Op is seeing?

Possibly, though I don't see anywhere in Windows 8 task manager that actually displays network throughput in MB/sec instead of Mb/sec. Disk throughput, yes, but not network.

Good point, I don't see it either but wondered if it was a Win 8.1 option or "feature" I'd not discovered yet but probably not!

That's exactly the answer I was looking for, just an explanation of the numerical figures being shown on the Networking tab.
