Cancelling TV Means New 12 Month Contract?
Evening all,
I've contacted VM retentions today via online chat to query how much it would be to cancel my TV and just keep BB and phone. Ironically its 50p cheaper to keep More TV with 50Mb BB and phone than it is just to have BB and phone.
However I genuine have no need to keep the TV so would rather get rid altogether for the sake of 50p per month. However the person I spoke to said cancelling TV would trigger a new 12 month contract for BB and phone.
I left it earlier to have a think about it but the more I thought about, the more I cannot understand why I'd have to take out a new contract when I am simply removing a service and downgrading the broadband?
Anyone else come across this and can offer any explanation? Or have I been told a bunch of rubbish?

I guess it is because you are out of contract on your BB and as such you will, technically, be starting a new contract for BB. I guess this would then go towards the new customer figures we hear about each quarter. It's all about the figures these days.
If it helps, I was told I had taken out a new 12 month contract for the minimum TV when I cancelled TV.

Is fibre over your BT phoneline not an option in your area or do you require faster speeds still ? I use BT's FTTC and the service has been generally pretty good it also allows you to switch between different providers on the Openreach network such as Sky , PlusNet , BT , Talk Talk etc.

Not yet MM, they installed the BT Infinity cabinet and ducting in my area about a year ago but my exchange has not yet been connected/enabled.
I have paid Line Rental Saver with VM until December so was just going to stick with them until then and then weigh up my options, hence why I'm a bit reluctant to take another 12 month contract.

It was cheaper for me to keep M TV along with BB and phone, when all I wanted to keep was BB and phone.
I just went with the offer as it effectively gave me the main Freeview channels with the best PVR around.
They did include some other discounts, which led to a new 12 month contract, and I also started paying line rental up front.

I cancelled TV and phone back in December and wanted the BB to drop down to 50 from 120, the CS adviser said this would be a new 12 month contract. I told her to leave it at 120 and i'd review other providers.
We carried on talking and i mentioned BT had offered LL and 38Mb BB for about £27, the end result was i got the BB downgraded to 50 at £19.50 and there wasn't a new contract. I wasn't interested in keeping the phone either, even though i could probably have got it thrown in for round about the same price.

Thanks for the responses guys, appreciate your help and just thought I'd report back with an update.
Spoke with retentions again regarding cancelling TV and they really didn't seem bothered. Due to a loyalty discount on my bundle it's actually cheaper to downgrade from Big Kahuna to Big Easy (50Mb with M TV + LR) until that runs out than take just 50Mb + LR. So ended up keeping TV for a few months.
On the TV front (as I mentioned I was going to in other threads) I've took the plunge and signed up with Sky. Got offered The Complete Bundle for £25 a month for a year so couldn't turn that down so Sky here I come!

John, it was the full Sky TV package (Family, Sports, Movies & HD) no BB or phone.

That's very good as the price for that is about £75, you must have got about 65% off.
I said to myself i wouldn't do a subscription again but i think i'd grab that.
Did you already have a dish or was there any extra charges?

Yeah full price is £75.75 so a great bargain.
Not currently got a dish but you just have to pay a one-off £10 set-up fee.
And yes, just went on live chat to see what they could do. Good luck

I downgraded my package and Virgin tried to put me on a 12 month contract again. I threatened to cancel reminding them I could get a good deal elsewhere with a new contract and they backed down. I have written confirmation off them now that I am not tied in for 12 months.
