Not everyone has access to this at the moment. Would this also put internet prices up as everyone will be demanding more bandwidth (more channels)?
You need about 1Mbits for SD channels and 2Mbits for HD channels (assuming MP4 or equivalent is used?), the beauty of IPTV is that it is on demand channel streaming. It only streams the channel you request to watch, a bit like VOD.

Sorry for the questions, but Its a good discussion and I like the way that VM would take it based on what you have said in your post.
Comcast's DVR in the USA currently records a show to the local HDD like most PVR's but also makes the show available in the cloud so recordings can be accessed on mobile devices , tablets , laptops etc.

If everything was solely recorded in the cloud you would indeed need a reliable broadband connection.

Netflix actually suggests 5Mbit for it's HD streams https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306 (and 25Mbit for Ultra HD!)

And remember that's per stream per box, whereas linear TV is fixed.

Will Sky/VM/Talk Talk/BT want us to move away from linear TV and move to a cloud-based on-demand service?

Isn't there more revenue to be earned through advertising on linear TV at the moment? Or would this advertising be pushed across to on-demand programmes too?

I guess this isnt really for Coming soon to VM TV, but it is kinda related

4K TiVO anyone? lol

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

On Demand is already delivered from the cloud , this is moving your recorded shows into the cloud making them accessible from anywhere on a multitude of devices , it also enables cloud bookmarking start a show whilst out on the ipad and continue where you left off on the STB.

which is quite efficient seeing as Astras's 4k test channel on 19.2 & 28.2 is broadcasting at 29Mbit currently without surround sound, it does look awesome though, Netflix 4k is also awesome with the right source. (The blacklist was brilliant).

Sensibly, when developing for VM, they didn't make it support three. They made it support any number. So 4, 6 or anything else then became possible without any extra software development.

Which is really the key bit.

If the Premier does get an Amazon Prime app, which is supposedly imminent according to the Tivo community forums, then it does open the door, from a technical perspective, for a potential VM/Amazon deal.

And, if VM were to want a box with more tuners or larger HDD, it is possible.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

Premier Sports ceased to be BARB reported from 15 February 2015.

They obviously aren't making enough from advertising to make it worth paying the fee.

In most cases recordings will be cloud based, not that it stores a fresh copy of the program! It will just set a record in a database that this registered user has requested on demand access to that program for 90days.

So any new Tivo box or whatever it maybe will resemble the Amazon Fire TV set top box, it maybe even an app on your smart TV!

These simple set top boxes probably cost £20-£30 each to buy in 10s of thousands, where as the Tivo boxes are north of £100 each. The value will be in the functionality of the software, not the features of the hardware.

VM are going to save millions in hardware costs, at £20-£30 each VM would just put one in the post if you current one failed. Fewer customer visits, no repairs equals less staff, reduced costs.
I sincerely hope on demand access will be considerably longer than 90 days!

My recordings go back over a year and I would want to be able to access anything I flagged up on the cloud for a similar period.

Is 90 days some sort of industry standard or did you make that up as an example?
