Strange question, I know

I just upgraded my PC monitor from 19" to 28" because I am slowly going blind and the 19" was getting hard to see, and I do a lot of photo editing.

Now 28" is actually bigger than my TV (22"), so I was thinking, perhaps I could hook my V+ box up to the monitor as the monitor has 3 HDMI inputs, and watch TV on the larger monitor instead of the normal TV.

However I note that the V+ box only has a pair of SCART outputs.

So, my question is:

Will hooking a TV decoder to a PC monitor via HDMI even actually work in the first place? I assume it will, I hooked the DVD player to it without issue.

Can I get some form of SCART to HDMI coverter without it costing the earth, or is it possible to get a decoder off VM which has HDMI outputs instead of SCART.

If its possible, I assume I will also need some form of breakout cable to take the audio to my PC's speakers, or does HDMI carry audio also? My monitor has two, admittedly rather poor, speakers built in.

Thanks for the advice.

Re: Strange question, I know

The V+ is an HD device so it does have an HDMI output socket.

...or have I misinterpreted your requirement?

I am sorry, but there isn't.

Ignore the dirty trouser leg, I'd just gotten in from a cycle ride.

I guess I'm going to need something like one of these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/scart-to-hdmi-converter

Which considering the cost, doesn't seem really worth the expenditure.

Obviously not, because it doesn't look like any of those. The first link in my last post is a photo of the back of my box.

Re: Strange question, I know

Any chance of posting a pic of the front of the box?

I'm sure someone who knows the VM box evolution timeline can identify it.

If you're paying for a V+ on your account i'd phone VM and ask to swap the box for one with HDMI output as yours could be old tech.

Seems like a standard samsung box then rather than a V+.? Yep, that's the one, the model numbers are both the same.

Re: Strange question, I know

Sorry to say, but you haven't got a V+. That's a Samsung 2110 (V-box)

What other inputs does your monitor have? There may be something that is compatible with SCART without the expense of a SCART-HDMI converter.

Alternatively, give VM a call and see what it will cost to upgrade to V-HD box, which does have an HDMI output.

By the way - what's that dirty splodge above the power cable? If it's smoke damage, you should get VM out to look at it.

Re: Strange question, I know

My monitor only has 3xHDMI inputs and AC-power input.

For those who asked, its a terribad picture, but heres the front of it..

So basically, theres no way to connect this to my nice new monitor without the expense of a scart to hdmi converter. Thats a shame. I won't be asking VM if its possible to upgrade the box, I have no desire to start a new contract with them.

Thanks for the advice anyway, guys.

We got the upgrade to the (Cisco) HD box (with HDMI and SCART outputs) to go into the new shiny Sony TV as we're on the XL service without signing a new contract. Just booked a self install on the website for £20. Probably could have blagged it for free by phone but I hate talking to CS.

Re: Strange question, I know

Don't forget that the HDMI conection to your monitor will only give you video - you still need something to handle sound. Pity you didn't get an LCD TV which can also be used as a monitor but would give you sound as well (assuming you overcome the HDMI problem). I use my old Panasonic plasma 37" as a monitor and, whilst its not the most economical to run and is basically a heater that can show pictures, it works well.
