Man wins TV licence battle (from 2012)

A MAN who took on the TV Licensing authority in court and won is still waiting for his costs to be paid.

Michael Shakespeare, from Grays, made sure all his equipment at home could not receive a live TV signal and watched catch up TV through the internet, which you do not need a TV licence for.

Mr Shakespeare wrote to the authority to inform it what he had done, inviting it to send someone round to check it out.

An inspector was sent round to check the equipment and Mr Shakespeare filmed it.

He heard nothing more until five months later, when a summons for court arrived in the post for non-payment of his TV licence.

He made the mistake of allowing them into his house, that gave them the opportunity to fabricate evidence against him. Had they not gained evidence they couldn't have done this.

It's pretty much like when they get people signing the statement they take, they then have the ability to alter someting you have signed at a later date implying that you have admitted your are guilty.

Many people are tricked into thinking they have authority, when they are just a company trading with sharp practices that the legal system turns a blind eye to.

Very true.
as silly as it sounds it's the same with the police. you could have 10kg of pure heroin in your boot. and unless you confess to it being yours or having any knowledge of it. you'll more than likely get away with it.

what I'm saying is. don't sign anything. your signature can and will be used against you in a court of law.

I saw a Lord on BBC Parliament listing what he thought should happen to the TV Licence Fee. Stay the same, add computers and other devices to the list of things needed to be licenced, "other things", and yet more "other things". The bloke didn't have a clue!

They were quite right. If there are to be changes to the way the BBC is funded, then the correct forum is Charter Review. Piecemeal changes, including changes to the enforcement regime, would not be helpful.

I've just been sent to prison for not paying my TV licence and I'm gutted.

Still at least I will be able to watch TV all day without worrying about it.
