Well interest rates are set in part to meet the inflation target. But that's not the point, the point is that these Virgin increases are higher than other rises in the cost of living, and so it's difficult to see how they're justified.

50% of all cost of living rises are higher than inflation, what's your point?

Re: Virgin Media to raise broadband and phone prices in Feb 2015

Well my rise is 10%. The 5.9% VM were quoting is a fairy story. A call to retentions got me a £50 credit which wipes out the rise for the next year for me. Already getting an £11 loyalty discount which can't be bettered as the new discounts are lower. For once I believe them. Good thing about a credit is that it doesn't enter me into a new contract, so am free to cancel/renegotiate next month having pocketed the cash

My increase is £5.64 and since my monthly payment currently is £33 that is over 17% increase. I will cancel something, just undecided yet between landline or Tivo.

CDB's point, which you questioned, is, I believe, that the Virgin increase is a significant one and difficult to readily justify. I agree with CDB. I don't think your contribution was meant to be anything other than argumentative, and fwiw, displays a poor understanding of the relationship between the overall cost of living, cost of products and services, inflation and interest rates, all of which are inter-connected, although I accept that CDB appeared also to have had this relationship confused. Whilst I wouldn't usually wish to answer one question with another, I think in the circumstances my answer to your question "what's your point?" is, in fact, what's yours? That the Virgin increase should just be meakly accepted because it's not as bad as some others?

Jim
If you have BB, Phone and TV it won't be worth your while cancelling Landline as the way the packages work it ends up more expensive.

I wanted to get rid of my landline but it would have cost more, so I got rid of Landline and TV and just kept BB saving £19. Now I have Freeview and Now TV which gives me everything I watch anyway.

Be interesting to see if they still send me a letter, bearing in mind i'm paying more than the bundle price anyway.

I've got equal to the Big Kahuna bundle and paying £7 a month more than is listed on the website!

I see no fact or hypothesis describing why it may be hard to justify.

You seem to have completely failed to grasp how inflation works and the definition of "average".

My point is for an inflation figure to exist at all half of the counted items must rise by more than inflation. If everything rose by equal or less than inflation, inflation would rapidly tend towards minus infinity.

As for cost of living, the majority of people in the world do not require premium broadband or cable TV for living.

Don't settle for it Ken. Give them a ring and make them value your custom.

VM are chancing their arm with these 10%+ rises. They hope customers are too apathetic or don't know how to work out percentages. They are probably right for the majority of punters, which is all the better for the minority prepared to challenge them. VM retentions are an open goal - just kick the ball !

Re: Virgin Media to raise broadband and phone prices in Feb 2015

My letter says an increase of £4.89, so 7.9%.

Up from 1st Feb, when my billing date is the 16th, so half a month at the new rates?
