Upload caps removed?

I normally make sure that i never go past the upload caps, but today i went out with a upload going on in the background and got back to find that after 4hours of uploading 2052MB an hour (on average), i'm still not capped, according to VirginTraffic management @ http://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-ma...hresholds.html i should have received my first 1 hour cap to 3mbit after i uploaded 1250MB, but as you can see from the graph below, that never happened. So, my question is, are the upload caps not removed? In the graph the outgoing (upload) bandwidth is 4.56Mbit/sec (my max is 6Mbit and i set it to upload at 5 on average)

Re: Upload caps removed?

That's interesting. I'm not a heavy uploader so I can't comment myself, but just before the download caps were officially removed, many people reported not being STM'd. Could be a mistake, but it could also be Virgin "trialing" removing the upload cap to see its affect.

Re: Upload caps removed?

Nevermind it worked all the way up till 22:28 and then capped me to my 2 hour reduced speed of 2176Kbps. Oh well thought virgin had removed the caps

Re: Upload caps removed?

I am wondering whether they are trialling different thresholds in the background with a view to relaxing it a bit more. If they let people know they are trialling it then people will deliberately try and upload more just for the sake of it and it will skew the results. If they do it silently in the background then they will get a true picture of the traffic and how it impact the networks. It is about time they go rid of stm altogether. They can only increase download speeds so much before they have to increase upload speeds and if they do that they are going to have to change the stm limits.

Re: Upload caps removed?

Just a few months ago, I would have assumed that Virgin's systems were just broken and that it was in error. Given the investment and changes over the last while, though, I'm more inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume this is a trial of some kind.

Perhaps just wishful thinking on my part. Would be awesome to have the best download and upload of all the major ISPs, though. One can dream of 5:1.

Re: Upload caps removed?

if they can get rid of stm then at least it is something they can proud of and actually advertise with a good conscience for once: the fast broadband supplier with no limits (forget the whole "totally unlimited" rubbish)

Re: Upload caps removed?

I decided to upload a database file approx 5GB and set my FTP to upload at 600KB/sec. Which meant i should have passed my limit of approx 1250MB within 35mins and capped.

However as you can see from the graph below, no capping whatsoever.

Re: Upload caps removed?

well I'm not sure about this but I think a connection gets added to a list in order or transfer speed and amount and worst offender get hit first, if the network is very good or full of very busy uploaders then in most cases you won't get hit, I'm probably wrong but it would make sense.

I have done uploading before for days on end and when i look back over the bandwidth monitors it only dropped down to managed levels a 1 day out of 4 and only lasted an hour and half before midbnight jumped in.

My quality monitors in this time went stupidly crazy. I also notice that if I was restricted to 4mbps upload and I capped my uploads at 2mbps the latency would still be bad and same still if stopping uploads all together.

So its almost like virgin say "bad customer" "go to your room".... I like paying a monthly fee to bitch about broadband.

Re: Upload caps removed?

There is no point capping if the area isnt congested, hopefully some clever software can override the capping
