Will my motherboard work with this graphic card?

Hi,

I am thinking about upgrading my graphic card, currently a XFX AMD HD6870 1GB.

I have the following motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z68A-D3-B3

Would this graphic card work with the M/board: XFX Radeon R7 250 1GB GDDR5
Link: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/c...250a-zlf4.html

It says it is PCIe 3.0

Re: Will my motherboard work with this graphic card?

It will work as it will drop to PCI-E 2.0 speeds unless you have a Ivy Bridge cpu installed.

I wouldn't call it a upgrade though as iirc it is a slower card.

So your motherboard and graphics card both say PCIe 3.0 compatible, what's the problem?

Regardless it's backwards compatible in any case.

He's right about it not being much of an upgrade though, unless your main goal is to save power, since it's about three times slower.

Re: Will my motherboard work with this graphic card?

This is a good guide for comparing graphics cards.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ew,3107-7.html

It shows that your current card is 2 tiers above the one you are thinking of getting so the new card would be a downgrade unless your current card is broken then get the best you can afford.

Re: Will my motherboard work with this graphic card?

AMD like to create new numbering systems that effectively rebadge slightly older chip designs. All very confusing. The only way to know what is really what is to look at the review sites and check those comparison league tables.

Re: Will my motherboard work with this graphic card?

Gaz the only upgrade on that card would be the 280 or 280x as even the 270's are still built on the 6870 chip.

So do NVidia. And Intel. And AMD.

The only real thing model numbers are useful for are to judge a product's relative positioning within other models of the same generation. And even then, both NVidia and AMD like to deceptively rebadge massively cut down versions of two generations' old cards with the same model number as their top end desktop cards, just shoving an "M" on to the end of it... GTX 880M anyone?

Re: Will my motherboard work with this graphic card?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, will look at the 270/280 graphic cards.
So any PCIe 3 graphic card will step down to PCIe 2 if needed?

I have an Intel i5 2500k CPU

Re: Will my motherboard work with this graphic card?

Yes any PCIe 3 card would work but it will only work at the level of the motherboard, so if you have only got PCIe2, card will only work at that level, to be honest if you have the money you should upgrade you entire system. I'm in the same boat as I only have an PCIe 1 slot, so I have to upgrade my system to use the next gen cards to there full potentional, otherwise it would be a waste of money. I looking at either the R9 290x or the R9 295x2 but that card costs £1200.

Not entirely true. PCIe 3 is backwards compatible with 2.x but NOT always backwards compatible with 1.x:

Re: Will my motherboard work with this graphic card?

qasdfdsaq, my post but it was directed to big-gaz not for the other guy, I did'nt realize that he even had a PCIe 1 question. umbrokhan786 if you have a PCIe 1 system then you have to upgrade your motherboad, this is the reason I am still using an old GPU becuase I know it will not work.

Big-gaz you also need to make sure that your PSU will be able to handle the card if it is a better card than the one you have.
