Didn't realize they provided 49 million RGU,s to customers, and grew by 350k in one qtr, that's a hell of a lot.

The actual change in TV figures over the last 12 months was a reduction of 33,500 year on year from 3,782,100 to 3,748,600. In Q1 2014, 4,700 TV customers were lost. I've found the 15,000 figure in VM's figures. I can only assume it excludes leavers. So you're right but it's a bit misleading.

Found a bit more for you tucked away on p10 of VM's results:
"We acquired Smallworld Fibre Limited (“Smallworld”) during Q1 2014. At the date of acquisition, Smallworld’s network passed approximately 44,900 two-way homes in western Scotland and the northwest of England. Smallworld accounted for 6,000 customer relationships and 14,700 RGUs (comprising 3,700 television, 5,300 internet and 5,700 telephony RGUs).
We plan to connect their similar network to our network, which will enable us to offer broadband speeds of up to 152 Mbps and TiVo to residents in these areas for the first ."

If we look at broadband additions in the last quarter, Sky gained 70,000, VM gained 34,800 organically and a further 6,000 by purchasing Smallworld. The big winner in broadband acquisitions at the moment is BT whose results are due tomorrow. Expect it to have gained over 100,000 net boadband customers in the same quarter.
It's useful to compare companies' performances to previous years and to competitors to provide context and meaning. Pay TV growth has certainly slowed down for Sky but it is still putting on pay-TV satellite customers as well as Now TV customers. VM states it is losing pay tv customers but these are free TV customers.

That is correct, nevertheless, paying TV customers increased by 56,000 during 2013, including 18,600 in Q4. Organic pay tv growth in Q1 2014 was 15,000.

4,700 organic TV losses. Reduced to -1,000 once Smallworld is included

The 15,000 is NET organic pay tv growth. It it includes leavers, it excludes free tv.

No. Virgin states it is adding pay tv customers, that the overall losses are down to a decline in the free TV base.

"Virgin Media’s [organic] television base shrank by 4,700. The company said the decline was due to the discontinuation of its free offer of basic channels and said that it had actually increased the number of households paying for television by 15,000."

Re: Liberty Global to reveal 1st Quarter Results on May 6th.

I do think comparing to Virgin's competitors is entirely relevant in this thread. How virgin compares to its competitors is a much better indicator of performance than sheer growth alone. If the market as a whole is stagnating and Virgin still does well, they're doing a lot better. If the market is shrinking and Virgin looses less customers than their competitors, then they're doing well. Likewise, if the market is expanding and Virgin adds less customers than competitors, then they're not doing as well. It's all relative.

Taking sides with one company over another just because you like them more is a bit stupid. Business is business, at the end of the day.

The BT results are in. It gained a net 170,000 broadband customers in the quarter. Its share of new non-cable broadband customers is now 79% whereas pre-BT Sport it was 50%.
BT now has 2.7m fibre customers with a further 2.1m buying the service via Sky and TalkTalk.
In TV, it gained 46,000 new customers to finally make the million customer mark. Its fibre broadband now passes 19m UK homes.
TalkTalk's results are due on Thursday May 15. Will be interesting to see their TV and broadband figures. Previous results continue to show broadband customers moving from the smaller IPSs to the big four.

QFT.

I choose my supplier on cost, services, and convenience - I have no loyalty to mega-companies (but I do try to support local shops and businesses - even if the cost is slightly more for a local shop, I will use them).

Interesting with 79% of connections on the Openreach network this quarter being with BT Retail , Dido Harding will be taking a good look at those figures , hasn't she complained about fibre pricing ?
