I didn't get the update yet. Give it a couple of days I guess then try to install it manually.

You're not missing much as a PC user - I too was hoping for a more traditionally functionable start button. Other than any 'under the hood' changes all I've noticed is the Store button on the taskbar (useless as I rarely if ever use the Store). Also clicking on the start button and going past the 'Metro' screen allows you to sort the apps in to most used, name, date installed etc which I guess is a bit more useful. Not sure if you were able to do this before but you can also shrink the taskbar to about half the width which will help if you have a small screen.

There may be other cosmetic changes but for how I use my computer that's about it.

Of course the main reason for the update is that if you don't do it, you lose any future security updates for 8.1

I am still using Windows 8 on my laptop and use StartIsBack so I am assuming that I will need to sort out the original 8.1 before I can install this latest 8.1? Only considering doing this because of Ben's post above which mentions that " if you don't do it, you lose any future security updates for 8.1 "

Is there anything I need to know about/do to ensure a smooth install?

I have startisback running and the update did not conflict at all.

Oddly, if you haven't yet installed 8.1 then security updates for Win8 will carry on until 2016

However, I'd personally say it's worth the upgrade to 8.1 via Windows Store anyway - there is nothing in either update that makes Win 8 worse

Personally, I think one of the nicest tweaks 8.1 does is allow you to have your desktop background on the Start Screen - makes a huge difference in feeling more connected between it and the Desktop, and then the 8.1 update goes further down that route.

Thank you Ben. I hate that I am so timid when it come to computers. Any sign of a blank screen or something taking too long and I start eying the gin bottle for courage.

It's odd - I just turned on my laptop and it downloaded the update straight away. Still not on my main pc though.
