It's degraded to 8 meg evenings now either because they've added more customers (it doesn't take much to tip the thing into the red) or they've temporarily swung customers onto our line card while they upgrade UBRs or whatever.
They tell us nothng. So you can expect anything to happen!

We went from 6 to 8 downstream a month or so before the 152mb boost but we've always had the max speed here no matter the packages over the years be they 50mb, 100, 120 and now 152. I think our area is more BT and Sky than Virgin tbh as i don't know anyone other than myself and my old man who use Virgin.
I honestly don't think they are anything to do with over-utilization or the current boosts but rather just a general thing they are doing everywhere for the future.
Still on 16QAM and only 2 for upstream.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
We've been on 8 DS channels for months and months now, long before the 152meg came along. Still on 2x QAM16 upstreams, too.

A few people have 64QAM up now. Don't think there've been any 3rd/4th upstreams in the bonded groups yet though.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
On topic more channels aren't essential for this round of upgrades, as I mentioned usage doesn't increase in exact proportion with speeds so areas which have plenty of free capacity already don't need any upgrade right now.

Is the speed upgrade automatic or do you have to go on my virgin media to activate it?

No, it's not. You'll get told it's available, but you won't get it until you go onto My Virgin Media.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
that's a good way of not having to give it to everyone. I bet a large majority of customers will either not bother with the extra speed because they think they don't need it or they won't go for it because they think there will be some caveats and stuff you have to sign up for which will put people off

Agreed. People will be concerned that they may lose loyalty discounts, or be tied into another year of being under contract. I doubt it will be made clear whether or not that is the case.
Given that anyone on 30meg or more should have a Superhub, why for those people, isn't it an automatic update?
Seems like a shady way of doing things to me.

I thought it was tbh, I thought the only peeps who had to go through myvirginmedia one the customers who had been identified as needing a docsis3 compatible modem (i.e. a shub) because they are on 20mbits or below. Ben may want to correct me.

Re: Virgin Media 150Mb Coming 2014
I will
It's opt in for everyone, mainly to be a simple a message and process as possible i.e all customers get the same email communications and then follow the same process.
It also allows for a managed upgrade process for capacity reasons - you aren't suddenly moving a large chunk of an area up a speed in one go.

So if people agree to the speed upgrade via the opt-in procedure, can you guarantee that:
1) They're not tied into a further 12 month contract.
2) Any loyalty discounts they currently receive will not be removed. i.e. the price they are currently paying remains unchanged.
Thanks
