Ah right.

Do they not have limited range though? They may have had to be fairly confident about the search area before deploying them.

Reading up on them it appears they are very limited in their capabilities ,they are towed behind a vessel such as Ocean Shield at a speed of 1-5 knots so you are correct there must be a high degree of confidence in the the area being searched for them to be effective

Was it not the Chinese boat that picked up the ping. The boat that China sent from the get go ?

It was the Chinese coasguard cutter (Haixun 01) that picked up the pings. The original ship they sent was the icebreaker/research ship Xue Long which was the closest vessel to the search area at the time. That's now heading back to Shanghai as they are probably running low on fuel and supplies.

marinetraffic.com are now feeding Orbcomm satellite data into the free version of their service for the Indian Ocean area, so you can now monitor any of the ships involved in the SAR operation which are sending AIS information.

Very nice of them as the satellite feed service normally costs a minimum of 270 quid a month.

I believe they are now treating the pings in the southern Indian Ocean as a credible find. The search area is narrowing.

It will also be interesting to see what that Russian "source" says when he sobers up. I believe potato vodka gives the mother of all hangovers.

You'll probably find all the passengers have been issued with Russian passports, and New Sov, sorry, the Russian Republic will annex the area they are in to support the inalienable rights of Russian Citizens....

Re: Malaysian Airline plane disappears

Current search pattern for Ocean Shield. Looks like a long and slow process as the towing speed for that pinger locator is only about 2 knots. HMS Echo (right) has also joined up over the past couple of days. She was originally tasked to the other search area with the Chinese ships. Hopefully they'll lock in on something soon.
