Lord Windermere won a thrilling renewal of the Cheltenham Gold Cup for trainer Jim Culloty and jockey Davy Russell.

Last season's RSA Chase winner, sent off a 20-1 outsider, was all out to hold the rallying On His Own by a short head, with The Giant Bolster a further three-quarters of a length away in third place.



Defending champion Bobs Worth held every chance at the final fence when jumping it just behind leader Silviniaco Conti, but both of them were passed on the run-in.

Ruby Walsh's Cheltenham Festival came to a premature end after a crashing fall in the first race left him nursing a broken arm.

The rider was diagnosed with a compound fracture of his right humerus, the bone in the upper arm, after parting company with Abbyssial in the JCB Triumph Hurdle.

Very Wood sprang a huge 33-1 surprise in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle to put trainer Noel Meade back on the Cheltenham Festival roll of honour.

Market leader Briar Hill fell at around halfway, fracturing his cheekbone and giving David Casey, replacing Ruby Walsh, a nasty fall, while Kings Palace folded when leading turning into the straight.

Daryl Jacob faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering multiple fractures in a dramatic incident before the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Jacob's mount, the Paul Nicholls-trained Port Melon, crashed into a rail before the race, throwing the rider to the ground in a spectator area and sending a Channel 4 camera position flying.

Willie Mullins has not ruled out an appeal against the decision of the Cheltenham stewards to allow Lord Windermere to keep the race after a desperately tight finish to the Gold Cup.

Mullins trains On His Own, who ran a great race to finish second and was beaten only a short head after the front two came close together on the run-in.

"I thought he was interfered with and he was beaten a short head and was in front after the line. The stewards felt he didn't deserve to get it and what more can I do at this stage? David (Casey) was disappointed at the outcome of the inquiry," said the handler.

Jockey Bryan Cooper could return to his home in Ireland in a week's time as he recovers in hospital from a broken leg.

Cooper suffered what was described as "a complex fracture" when he fell from Clarcam at the second-last flight of the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on Wednesday.

Davy Russell is still trying to take in what happened at Cheltenham on Friday after he won three races including the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Lord Windermere.

Russell, who lost his job as retained rider for the powerful Gigginstown House Stud operation to Bryan Cooper halfway through this season, ironically won the Triumph Hurdle and Grand Annual in the Gigginstown colours on Tiger Roll and Savello respectively.

Cooper broke his leg badly earlier in the week, enabling Russell to step in for some choice rides, and he is well aware how quickly fortunes can change in horse racing.
