Speed increase: how much paid, how much free?

Like many people Virgin have made me a promise "between August 2014 and January 2015 you'll be able to supercharge your speed to up to 50Mb broadband at no extra monthly cost." Currently I have 30Mb.

When I look at the Virgin website they offer to double my speed for £2.50 for the first three months, and then £5. If I accept that offer what happens to my charges when the free upgrade kicks in? Will I be paying £5 a month for 10Mb?

I take it that you are refering to increasing your speed to 60Mb here. If that is the case then, when you get free upgrade at the end of the year your speed would be increased to 100Mb.

The upcoming upgrades are 30Mb>50Mb, 60Mb>100Mb and 100/120Mb>150Mb.

The free upgrade will never be FREE. You will end up asked into 12 months contract with new price. They won't do it automatically. I know Virgin Media EVIL HELL.

If the OP asked to upgrade they will ask him before entering him in to a new contract, VM can't just put him on a new contract without telling him.

To the OP if you upgrade to 60Mb it will cost you more but you get 100Mb for your free upgrade, if you want to wait and get 50Mb then just wait for the free upgrade.

Re: Speed increase: how much paid, how much free?

Received my email today saying "get supercharged broadband on us", now to me "on us" means it's free. Virginmedia's definition of free is somewhat different to mine, I have already paid for the speed increase with the 10%+ increase (not 6.7%) that came in this month so I've actually paid for the increase before it's happened.

Re: Speed increase: how much paid, how much free?

I also have received an email from Virgin advising me that my current 20mb(very rarely) will increase to 50mb for free sometime in the 21st century, does this mean they will also provide a free super hub in order to implement this upgrade or do they expect me to pay for it?

If VM upgrade you and your current equipment can't handle the speed then you will get the SH free although I think it will be the SH2 as they don't offer the SH anymore unless its a like for like swap.

You will get a free Superhub.

The planned date for your upgrade is available to you in My Virgin Media.

Don't really need the speed at the moment but I'm probably dropping the TV service in favour of streaming + Freeview so that may change.
Are you sure you're on 20M and not 30M?

Why do you ask that?

There are many, like myself, who are still on BB M 20Mb. We will be getting upgraded, like BB L 30Mb customers, to 50Mb during the coming upgrade program.

Simply because I'd never seen someone on a < 30Mbit tier with a Superhub before.

...until now, that is! I thought Virgin were pushing everyone to be on 30mbit minimum by giving out superhubs as part of an upgrade. How did you end up with a SHUB, anyway? Replacement for a faulty modem I'm guessing?

Either way, it'll be a nice little boost for you.

I wonder what Virgin's longer term plans for older DOCSIS1/2 users is. I presume they want everyone on DOCSIS3 eventually and I wonder if that will help open the network to more upgrades.

I have a Superhub 2 on my legacy 20mb connection. Being invited to trial equipment is my friend.
