Nexus 7 v Kindle Fire HDX
So the wife wants a tablet.Shes fed up of the DS. It will be used to mainly play games, check local/natinal news, social media etc.Have narrowed it down to the above 2. What are peoples thought on these. Should we be looking at something else. One qustion I have is are both compatable with google play and appstore on Amazon. Not really up to speed on latest technology.Budget is £250 top.
Many Thanks

Re: Nexus 7 v Kindle Fire HDX
I have the Kindle Fire and I love it however when it comes to apps it is slightly restricted. Browsing, watching films, iplayer etc are all excellent though.
As long as it's not a Google app (gmail, google+ etc) then there are ways you can get most apps from Google Play. Nothing to do with rooting or anything nasty, just download the file to a computer then drag and drop it in to the Kindle. I went for it as I prefer the reading app for my Kindle books however you can get a version for the Nexus.
However if it came down to it for overall use, I'd have gone for the Nexus if given the choice.

Re: Nexus 7 v Kindle Fire HDX
I'd choose the Nexus as the Kindle is limited to the amazon app store.

Re: Nexus 7 v Kindle Fire HDX
I have the Nexus 7.I decided that after so many Kindles breaking down that I'd go for an android tablet because I was already using an android phone. You can use more than one app for reading and you can still use your amazon account.the only issue is that Google store books are a little more expensive.

Android has an official kindle app Maggy. So don't need to purchase from Google.
also the Fire HDX does run android but Amazon have hidden it under their software.

It's not limited to the Amazon store, you can get things from Google Play - you just need to download the file then drag and drop it. A bit annoying but no big issue.

Re: Nexus 7 v Kindle Fire HDX
I bought the Nexus 7.1 in October but my son has just bought the Asus equivalent. Differences? the ASUS has front and rear cameras and a micro SD slot so memory is expandable whereas the NEXUS isn't. You can use a USB OTG cable and download an app by NEXUS from Google store if you want to get round that. Son's really happy with his, my Nexus is basically an updated Kindle but if I go on holiday I don't have to lump my laptop case with me. Battery life is ok bought a case with stylus, on that site named after a big river in South America, for about a tenner. Oh and if you look at the back of the NEXUS it says ASUS. ASUS was out £20 cheaper last I looked

Re: Nexus 7 v Kindle Fire HDX
Groupon had the older Nexus 7 32GB wifi for around £130. May still be available. It's what I have and it's fine for requirements listed

Re: Nexus 7 v Kindle Fire HDX
I'd say if you can't get anything else then the Kindle Fire will do you very well as it's a good bit of kit but if the Nexus is available go for that instead.

Its ASUS that manufacture the Nexus 7 for Google.
The Asus tablet may not have the same specs that the Nexus has.
