You're failing to acknowledge the difference. The variety you speak about is fine; we all have channels we don't watch and those that we do, but these are non premium channels. BT sport is a premium channel that VM are forcing all XL users to pay for. Premium channels should be optional, paid for only by the ones who want to watch them; that is why they are called premium channels.

And why should I downgrade to avoid the cost of BT sports and in the process lose HD channels? Let people who want premium sport (or any other premium channel) pay for it as intended; as a premium service.

I can see where you are coming from but there are more Sky Subscribers in the UK than there are people who have access to the service. And over here around half a million want access to these shows.

If they were to launch themselves then they would probably have a linear channel as well. But they also love the Sky Atlantic withheld deal because everybody who doesn't have access "most likely" purchases them on DVD and. BluRay with all the money going to them.

However since Atlantic, piracy of HBO shows has increased and this means they may be looking to monotise the people who currently don't have access.
How many people with pay tv would actually subscribe to a channel/On Demand purely containing HBO content I'd say very few going off the fact the overwhelming majority of voters in your poll said they wouldn't pay the current £4.99 for Now TV entertainment which includes all HBO's new content with different boxsets of its older content it also shows many new series from Showtime and a few exclusive Sky commisions , whilst HBO have some great content I certainly wouldn't pay a standalone charge of say £7-10 to watch it.

Well I guess 'you pays your money and you takes your choice'.

This is how VM have decided to package it, so it is for us to decide what is best for us.

We can all quibble about channels on our packages that we don't ever watch and don't want to pay for, but we have only ever been able to choose between packages.

If Sky, BT, Talk Talk etc offer a more attractive package in the eyes of existing subscribers, then I suppose customers will make up their minds where they want to be and each provider will work out how to best pitch their offerings from the results of those customer choices.

I don't watch BT Sports, but you only need to look at the reaction when it became apparent that this would be part of the XL pack to realise that this was a good move for VM. I am happy with it because I think it makes VM a better proposition, and the more subscribers VM gets, the more money they make that will ultimately benefit us in terms of investment.

My only niggle is that I wanted Netflix to be part of the XL pack. That way, there would have been something for film/drama fans as well as sports fans.

We could see then HBO launch their own channel and launch a UK version of HBOGO. with Netflix getting secondary rights maybe.

I think we should also consider that if there was an HBO channel launched, it could have additional content that was not a product of HBO. People would pay a subscription for it if the quality was good enough.

The same argument could be applied by those who have XL for BT Sports but don't watch HD. HD on Virgin should be optional, paid for only by the ones who want to watch HD content.

No doubt the decision VM have made brings in the most revenue.

I they had announced a reasonable price rise, then non sports fans would have been happy to accept giving sports fans a freebie. But because of the size, people are looking at what has possibly contributed to the large amount and giving away a premium service FOC has to be part of it.

Agreed, the advantage of XL has been reduced unless you are a Sports fan and VM should really offer advantages in other ways. Netflix either as part of XL or a discounted price, e.g. £2.99/month if you are on XL, would help. If I am willing to give up on most of HD and a few factual channels, then the L package is starting to look tempting as not bothered about BT Sports.

Fair point. Maybe they should reduce the price of XL and have BT sport and HD as two extra cost options?

There is very little to post that is firm information. Virgin do not generally pre-announce channels, which is why there is so much speculation on here.

We would all love to see an authoritative list of what is definitely coming to Virgin Media, but it just doesn't exist owing to the secrecy of the VM environment.

I really don't know what you expect. Media Boy provides a full list of what is confirmed on a regular basis. As you can see if you look at 2014, it ain't much.

The only reason we know about the BBC channels is because BBC announced them!

Aren't HD channels premium? What you pay for with Sky you get bundled with Virgin.
