Blunkett in Roma warning
Quote:
Tensions between local people and Roma migrants could escalate into rioting unless action is taken to improve integration, David Blunkett has warned.
The former home secretary fears a repeat of race riots that hit northern cities in 2001.
His concerns centre on the Page Hall area of Sheffield, where Roma migrants from Slovakia have set up home.
But he also accused the government of "burying their head in the sand" over the scale of Roma settlement in the UK.
In an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield, he said the Roma community had to make more of an effort to fit in with British culture.

And he accused the government of "burying their head in the sand" over the size of the Roma community living in the UK, which he said was revealed in a recent study by Salford University.
"They [the government] have been saying there is less than 50,000 Roma in England. The Salford study shows that at a very conservative estimate, there's over 200,000. That they constitute a very large minority, with real problems."

Not sure I recall him voicing too many similar concerns when his party was opening the migration floodgates, getting their sums badly wrong and indulging in social engineering. Odd that he's so worried now but maybe he's finally seen the light and those his party shouted down and accused of irrational bigotry had a point after all...
Quote:
Mr Blunkett's intervention was praised by UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who campaigns against the ending of border controls for migrants from Romania and Bulgaria, both countries with significant Roma populations.
He said: "Mr Blunkett should be admired for the courage he has shown by speaking so plainly on this issue. Of course, the type of language he has used I would have been utterly condemned for using.

He's got a point too hasn't he?

And good help us when the flood gates open soon for more Eastern European migrants. Its so nice of the EU to force us to open our borders. It was Labour who signed away our right to control our own borders so lets say thanks to LABOUR

It would have been forced upon us same as everything else pretty much the EU wants. All our leaders have shown no balls except ironically Thatcher of all people who at least paved the way for us to stay out of the monetary union
What we need as I know you agree is to sever ties with the EU and grow some balls and become great again

Re: Blunkett in Roma warning
... and, as if by magic, up pops Jack Straw to tell us all how they got migration all wrong. Has he only just realised this or is it just a device by which to throw people of the strong scent of social engineering which characterised their years in office...
Quote:
Having no restrictions on eastern European migrants in 2004 was a "spectacular mistake", former Labour home secretary Jack Straw has said.
The Labour MP said handing immediate working rights to Poles and others when they joined the EU nine years ago was a "well-intentioned policy we messed up".
Labour relied on research suggesting 13,000 migrants a year would arrive.
But the influx was much larger than expected and contributed to net migration rising above 200,000 a year.

It seems to me having made such a catastrophic and irreversible 'mistake', which they denied for a decade or more, we really shouldn't believe what they say now and certainly not the usual old promises along the lines of " yes we're terribly sorry we made mistakes but we've learned our lessons and promise to make it all better if you vote us back into office, blah, blah, blah..."

Re: Blunkett in Roma warning
Not rioting as yet, but definitely family/tribal battles between Roma around here, and that is mostly Czech and Slovakian Roma. The Czech Roma I know are scared stiff of Romanian Roma and are not looking forward to their numbers rising next year.

My partners youngest daughter went out to play with a group of Czech kids as she is in school with them. The friend called for her and they had to take the long route to avoid the Romanian Roma group who congregate in large numbers just off City Road.
I was stopped a few months ago as I was walking just off City Road by an elderly couple who asked if they could walk with me as they were afraid. There is no other way of putting it but these people really do act like **** and have made the area pretty much a no-go zone for decent people.

Re: Blunkett in Roma warning
I don't suppose you'll get any apologies for that sad state of affairs or that any will be forthcoming when the next wave arrives. Thanks in large part to the last Government, the genie is well and truly out of the bottle.

There's really no need to worry at all you know. According to an 'in-depth study' it's being forecast that only a few hundred will arrive on our shores after January...

The Kurdish (from several countries) population in that area has been strong-arming the locals (especially shopkeepers) and they seem able to buy the latest and poshest cars all of a sudden. The Roma and the Kurds don't get on well either, but I haven't heard of any violence yet.

Ah well it's all part of the EU sponsored cultural enrichment programme. It's really great that we can now enjoy so many more ethnic tensions on our shores than ever before...
