Re: Winter of blackouts ?

To be honest, if it hadn't been Maggie it could have been Major, Blair, Brown or Cameron cutting the jobs of coal miners. Especially in this day and age, where the health and safety brigade would have been up in arms over miners work conditions.

Re: Winter of blackouts ?

It's not about mining coal, but about what is produced when it is burnt.

Re: Winter of blackouts ?

If it does happen and we get blackouts it'll show how short sighted this and previous governments have been regarding power supply and where we get it from.
It'll also show that our recovery is very fragile as if we end up going on a short working week due to lack of energy supply recession will undoubtedly follow.
No one particular gov can be blamed but the current one less so than Labor as if they had the foresight some new energy producing plants would be coming online around about now.
You have to discount renewables as it would take a huge effort from everyone (fill your roofs with photovoltaic panels and your gardens with mini turbines) to get the job done on that part.
Talking about renewable energy, we're looking into photovoltaic panels for our roof but our pitch is easy and west not the favored south facing.

5% is still a hell of a lot of energy in reserve. We won't need it.

More or less every year they issue this warning.

Just a pre-emptive strike before they put the prices up again and blame it on the shortage.

Re: Winter of blackouts ?

Maybe those who signed us up to the EU environmental agreements which have forced the premature closure of generating capacity should have thought a bit more about how to replace it.

Thanks to EU and international carbon reduction targets Labour signed us up to (stand up and be counted, Ed Militant).

No flame required - the state of the domestic coal mining industry is completely irrelevant to this news.

Yes, they probably can. They have a smaller reserve, but that reserve is still more than would be required in the vast majority of scenarios.

Some people do have selective memories don't they? They can remember everything Thatcher did decades ago yet can't seem to recall what the last govt. and key members of it did. Odd that eh...

Re: Winter of blackouts ?

It won't be long till the Conservatives tell us that the unemployed are using all the electricity by not going out to work.

but yes. they tell us this same old story every year. and not long after the prices go up.

Of course Ed's cheap gimmick on freezing prices will knock out lots of investment and deny us more new power stations... nice one Millibean....
