Netgear wireless modem/router strange issue

I've had the netgear wireless modem/router for quite a while and just started to have a strange problem.

We purchased a Samsung smart tv last week and connected it to the router with no issues.
The problem comes when trying to connect either our Xbox or PS3 as the netgear router seem to stop sending and receiving data (data light goes out) and the ready light continuously flashes but won't connect to the Internet.

As soon as the consoles are switched off the netgear router goes back to working fine after 20-30 secs. This happens regardless of being connected via wifi or Ethernet cable.

The devices connected to the router are

Laptop wifi
Ipad mini wifi
Samsung smart tv wife

And sometimes iphone.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Joff

Re: Netgear wireless modem/router strange issue

I am really confused dude. Have you got a shub (made by Netgear) because if you have got any other combi modem/router it wouldn't work because VM wouldn't let you use it on their network. Or have you got a VM supplied modem (perhaps an ambit 256?) and you have got a Netgear wireless router attached to it?

Either way, as I mentioned above, Shub's a produced by Netgear as well and there is a known issue console connectivity. Although I havent heard of it affecting other Netgear models maybe it is the same problem written into the firmware.

The hub I have is here

It worked fine till a week ago when we got a samsung smart tv and now it just stops working when a games console is connected although its fine with other devices.

Dear God no. That hub is worse than the superhub.

Re: Netgear wireless modem/router strange issue

are they new? I have never seen one before.

Anyways, the sad fact of the matter is that this hub along with the shub are both made by Netgear with VMs firmware. You'll find a tonne of threads with peeps complaining about routers falling over when they try and connect consoles to it. It sounds sad but I am just wondering whether your tv and consoles trying to connect to it at the same time are too much for it to handle. I know Samsung stuff has it's own media sharing software it uses to try and play/share stuff across the network so I don't know if it is constantly sending messages out trying to detect devices or what.

You arent going to fix the problem and I suggest the following:

1) ring VM up and moan that your router is broken and ask for a new one
2) they'll send you a shub which you can try but i doubt it will be any better
3) put the shub in modem mode and buy a proper router for £50 which will work (don't invest in a shub 2). Have a read of this http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...e-problem.html

No, they actually predate the superhub. They didn't give them out for too long before the Superhub essentially replaced them. Believe it or not, the superhub is a huge improvement on these things. They have even worse wireless and everything. They're DOCSIS2 so OP is on 20meg or less. I would strongly advice a call to retentions and get an upgrade to 30meg to get a superhub (fairly sure it'll be a free upgrade as part of the speed doubling, or at least a retentions offer).

So these are 20meg max !!!

If so then VM are in breach of their speed increase offer as the letter I got a few months ago stated I was getting a free speed increase up to 30meg (from 10meg) but if the equipment is not capable of it then VM have been ripping me off.

The hub I have now was issued as a replacement to an Ambit cable modem that was found to be faulty after a house move 4 years ago and to be honest its been not too bad until a week ago when we bought the samsung smart tv and now with more than 1 device connected (with the tv) it keeps going crazy and dropping the Internet connection.

There is obviously some conflict there but as the hub I have is probably obsolete I doubt the issue can be fixed without getting it replaced.

Re: Netgear wireless modem/router strange issue

Ring them up and see, then. As terrible as the superhub is, it's still better than this hub.

ya, and when you ring up to get the shub activated they should also provision you for 30mbits.

Re: Netgear wireless modem/router strange issue

There is no doubt. You have the original (useless) hub and you need to get it replaced.

Equally useless for wireless is the SuperHub 1; do make every effort to ensure that you don't get one of those! The SUperHub 2 is what you want and you'll have to fight for it.

Re: Netgear wireless modem/router strange issue

If the user is upgrading to 30M, then they will only get the SH1, unless they pay for the SH2.

If you have to pay I suggest spending your money on a proper router!!!

Re: Netgear wireless modem/router strange issue

Indeed, if you can get a SH2 for free it's worth the upgrade, but if you have to pay then SH1 in modem mode + Router is a much better combination.
