Exactly. Echoing Mark's earlier post, I think giving out Kighthoods to sportsman should be assessed, but a precedent has now been set. Along those lines I don't see why Murray shouldnt be given a knighthood. He has won a gold at the Olympics, the US Open, Wimbledon - not counting the grand slam finals he lost. THis in an era of amazing opponents. He has been in the top 3 of world tennis players for a while now and has been the best British tennis player of modern times.

TBH, thrashing the 'Baggy Greens' 10-0 over the next few months would do it for me.

This. To most British people winning Wimbledon after a 77 year British drought is a far bigger deal than being the first Briton to win the TdF. The reality is that the UK does not have much of a tradition in cycling, and it's only in recent years that it's become more popular (and successful).

As much as I like cycling, I think Murray's win is far more significant for the British public, and he's at least as deserving of a knighthood as a result.

 Oppps!
Yes, all the more reason Murray deserves a Knighthood. He will get one. The first British man to win Wimbledon for generations isn't going to be without a knighthood.

yep - they'd be gutted if Scotland got independence

If they don't the archbishop of Canterbury will guarantee him a knighthood
that he doesn't have to pay for and an eventual ascent into heaven via VIP lounge
in Blair's classless society

In terms of knighthoods handed out for sporting achievement in the modern era, what Andy Murray has done in the past 12 months has got to be up there.

In August he won Great Britain's first male singles Gold in over 100 years. On the same day he helped win our first medal in doubles mixed in over 90 years. By winning the US Open he became our first Slam winner in over 70 years and I really don't need to say anything about Sundays victory that isn't already known.

Murray is on the brink of being world number 1. If he achieves this it'll be the first time a Brit has been on top of the pile for over 70 years.
