Freeview in Nottingham
Hi, for some reason Both my freeview box and my TV working independently can only receive approx 12 freeview channels despite the official freeview postcode check reckons i should get approx 77. Reception on the channels i get is generally fine. Any idea's what the problem might be. My local transmitter is nottingham. No idea what ariel i have...would an amplifier work and any suggestions for a good one?
Thanks
mark

Re: Freeview in Nottingham
It really depends where in Nottingham you are, and which transmitter are you pointed at.

Re: Freeview in Nottingham
You should see a signal strength indicator on each channel. That would give you a clue as to whether an amplifier or aerial upgrade is needed.

Tv/freeview buff could need firmware updates.

Re: Freeview in Nottingham
Thanks for the replies. The nottingham transmitter is West NW of me. Signal strength appears very good on the channels i get. It'd be easier to list the channels i do have....1-5, itv2, BBC3/4, more 4,E4, ITV+1CBBC, Cbeebies, BBC news, BBc parliament and various radio. Exactly the same on my samsung LCD which is fresh out of the box yesterday.
Thanks
Mark

Re: Freeview in Nottingham
If you are still using an aerial that was put up for analogue it would need to be changed (you need a wideband aerial instead of a Group A now). If it has been changed, & there is not a fault with the aerial or downlead, then missing updates might be the problem.

Re: Freeview in Nottingham
If you're in Nottingham and your transmitter is to your West, then you're using the low power Nottingham transmitter. If you're able to, try pointing your aerial south-east-ish towards Waltham, which is higher power, but further away.
This site has lots of technical information on Freeview broadcasting:

Re: Freeview in Nottingham
Ok, sorry to sound technophobe like but am i right in assuming my ariel will be in the loft? The house was built in 1995 and there's no ariel on the roof.

Re: Freeview in Nottingham
How long have you lived there? It probably is in the loft, but if you've never seen it and didn't take any action to change it for digital switchover, then the solution to your problem is probably as described earlier in the thread by nodrogd. i.e. You don't have the right aerial to receive all the channels being broadcast from your transmitter.
Check in the loft. When you find the aerial, look at the front end of it. There will be a coloured plastic bung in the end. Post back and tell us what colour the bung is.
While you're at it, also tell us which direction it is pointing.
