BT speedtest result

Hi !

I just have BT line connected including BT Totally unlimited broadband. They start my service 6 days ago. Before I took it I heard my estimated speed will be between 3 and 7 Mbps. I was informed as well the first 5 days speed won't be stable. So the first day I had 5.6 Mbps download and 26 ms ping. Upload was 0.24 Mbps. After 5 days BT said I will reach maximum speed avaible but .... from 3 days my ping increased to 41 ms, download speed is 6.06 and upload only 0.17. Is it normal ? I am not happy with my ping and upload speed at all. Why after all tests and promised 5 days max. speed main dropped down and have terrible upload speed ? What upload you have ? Just ask you because I don't know it is normal or I have a reason to complain to BT.

I have 2.5 down and 0.35 up, ping normally around 80 but can be anything from 70 to 120. I'm on a long line (6-7km) on an exchange only enabled for up to 8Mb.

Do you have some idea of your line length and quality?

I have no idea. Just bit confused because first 3 days my ping was very stable and constant - 26 ms. After "bt 5 days setup to get best speed" it dropped down and ping is almost double and upload double lower. So ... It gives me a reason to think my line is able to give me more but bt does bad job .. When I ordered my broadband they never said what upload speed I will get but I didn't expect it will be so bad. Unfortunately fibre optic is not avaible in my area yet

The maximum speed you can possibly experience on your line is not the same as the maximum stable speed. You may simply have done your earlier speed test while the line was testing itself at the upper end of the range. As regards ping and upload, that's not something I have any expertise in. There are folks on here who are in to gaming and the like, so they tend to know more about ping and upload.

One thing you might try is running a test at www.pingtest.net - it will give you some impartial idea of what your line quality is like. Run the test, then under the results click the button that says "Forum Link". Come back here and copy (CTRL+C) into a post so we can see the results of your test.

The ping will have gone up in order to stabilize the line. Your speed will have gone down in order to stabilize the line.

Your speed usually connects at maximum on the first day then gradually decreases until a stable level is reached. The 5-day training period will not increase your speed, only decrease it.

Qas, seeing as you know your onions, what's with his shoddy upload? I've always thought of my line as being particularly horrible but my upload has always been rock solid, even when I get noisy episodes that relegate my download speeds to the Blue Square league.

yeah !! I agree and have noticed that is true

Speedtest.net tested in next minute shows 41 ms ping 5.84 download and 0.2 upload I took this broadband option for gaming that why ping is most important for me. Hope you can understand why I am fed up seeing the ping dropped from 26 to 41 ms

Sometimes a stable 40 ping can be better for gaming than a lower ping that fluctuates wildly. A few have switched from VM fibre back to adsl simply for a more stable ping for gaming.

With the results you get from speedtests it does look like you getting close to the best you can actually get for your location and on adsl.

Pray for fibre to hit your area!

It would depend on where the noise was. Like on VM, upstream and downstream uses different parts of the spectrum and interference may affect one and not the other. The frequencies allocated for upstream are 10% of those allocated for downstream, so it's a lot smaller target for, say, random interference to hit.

In respect of the OP's line, I would really prefer to see actual line stats, if not a DMT graph. That would require access to the modem - what modem do you have?

If he's got BT, he is almost certainly on a BT Homehub v3. From a PC connected to a Homehub 3 via Ethernet or wireless, the way in to the modem is to open a browser and go to bthomehub.home.

The modem stats are available by clicking these menus in turn:

Settings > Advanced Settings (admin user name and password required at this stage, if he hasn't set them up yet, the default ones are on the plastic tab slotted into the back of the Homehub) > Continue To Advanced Settings > Broadband > Connection.

Sometimes mobile phone operators are able to offer a much better speed compared to fixed line broadband, and sometimes its already included in your current mobile phone package.

check out some deals with Three or Virgin Mobile.

My friends fixed line broadband was 7Mb with BT, where as with Three he's getting around 22Mb down, with unlimited data included, its worthwhile checking!

I am using now bt homehub 3 and have about 0.13 to 0.30 upload. Was trying on dsl-2640R router two days but didn't notice any positive or negative change between them. I see my upload is not bad in compare with many users result. I was using adsl in Poland on copper wires and have there constant 10 Mb down and 2 Mb upload so I was so surprised why my BT works so bad .. now I understand it won't be better and I really have to pray for fibre (what is avaible just next street to me).

yeah .. if you remember we were talking about mobile broadband in another thread and finally I took normal broadband. In ultrafast in 3 network I had download speed over 20 Mb and upload over 2 Mb but the ping was killing unstable and had terrible lags in gaming. Now have good enough ping and no delays in game but terrible upload Best way to me to use download from BT and upload from mobile broadband

The maximum upload you can get on BT is 0.45 or 1.3Mb depending on the technology used. 2Mb upload even with 20Mb download is extremely rare in the UK. The majority of providers don't even offer it as a possibility.
