It's the 150th anniversary of the tube! One the oldest and largest metro systems in the world!

Ah it's alright. Wish it could be overhauled to allow for bigger trains and better stations but it does a good job considering the load it's under each and every day. It's gone unnoticed actually how much better it's got in the last year in terms of reliability, certainly better than National Rail (which faces less hurdles being mostly above ground!). Certainly held up during the Olympics too. Crossrail should help further...

Actually, not to be picky, but it's the oldest.

And the 149th year and 364th day since they first threatened to go on strike for higher pay.

Ok. I was just covering myself because you never know if some city, somewhere, had something that could be considered a metro system and someone therefore enters a QI-esque level of pedantry to correct you.

True, but I'd read it somewhere before and it was also mentioned in the article.

It pretty much is but I think there is some thing about the percentage of it being underground and so if you change the definition of a metro system to be 50% underground then it isn't the oldest. Like I said QI kinda stuff.

I'd love a tour of some of the closed stations and secret parts that the public don't get to see.

First ever journey on the Metropolitan Railway

Relative luxury compared to today. Only one person is standing up and nobody appears to have a sweaty armpit hanging above them.

Re: 150th Anniversary of the London Underground

There was a program on Sky recently and the underground was part of it.

Considering its age it is one of the biggest metro lines in the world, I would love to go down during the night between 1am - 5am when its not running and take it all in. Never once been to London but there is something about the underground that draws me in, maybe its a case of how do they do it with what they have.

Apart from those first trains being steam hauled so you enter tunnels in nice open carriages and exit covered in soot and all sorts of contaminants. A sweaty armpit probably has nothing on that

I'd love a tour of the houses at 23-24 Leinster Gardens in Paddington.
