It's always a good thing if people who've commited crimes get caught. However, somewhere along the line, a sensible judgement has to be made about what level of resources is appropriate and whether the manpower available for other, equally important but less newsworthy, criminal investigations is being compromised. I'm glad I don't have to make that judgement.

Update to my earlier post

Quote:
Two men in their 50s have been arrested on suspicion of sexual offences, the Metropolitan Police have said.

Officers from Operation Yewtree - set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal - arrested one man, aged 53, at an address in Hampshire.

The second man, aged 59, was arrested in west London at and taken into custody at a London police station.

Scotland Yard said the arrests were not connected to the allegations made against the late BBC presenter.

It would appear that based on the above and other unconnected arrests made that a lot of potential victims are coming forward as the fear of their allegations being ridiculed and discounted is diminished

re: Operation Yewtree

Whilst I am keen to ensure that allinvolved are brought to justice, do we really need a running commentary when someone is arrested?

Invariably the names of those arrested leak out despite the fact that they could be innocent.

As Lord McAlpine can sadly testify. It's right to pursue justice but that process shouldn't involve ruining the lives or careers of innocent people caught up in it.

re: Operation Yewtree

I am 100% convinced that the leveson inquiry* should have recommended that any suspect arrested for sex offences should not be named until charged and that should be law .I know it would be hard to keep it quiet but stopping the media( including Twitter/facebook accounts) from naming people and wording it in such a way as to make the suspect appear guilty before they have even been charged must be done imo

*can't remember if it was recommended

It is getting ridiculous the number of times that when reporting such arrests that JS is mentioned and a picture of him is even included, when the allegations have nothing to do with JS.

Agreed ,that is one thing i have noticed and in actual fact there have been very few arrests made that have a direct link to JS most have been unconnected

This scenario has been a common factor in rape cases for years, If a women makes a complaint of rape her name is keep secret, however the mans name especially if he is a celebrity is nearly always leaked by the press. Then if he is then found to be innocent the mud has already been thrown and will have stuck.

How does this information get into the public domain?

Who tells the press what is going on?

Most importantly, WHY?
